WAYNE COUNTY SHERIFF ASKS LAKE ONTARIO BOATERS TO AFFECT 500-FOOT “NO WAKE” ZONE

Posted by John Addyman 1 Comment

LYONS (JUN 1 11) – Wayne County Sheriff Sheriff Barry Virts is asking that all Lake Ontario boaters voluntarily observe a 500-foot “No Wake” zone off any shoreline of Sodus Bay, Port Bay and Blind Sodus Bay.
After a tour of the shorelines, Virts urged boaters to stay as far away as possible from any shoreline to reduce shoreline erosion, protect property and to avoid docks that may still be submerged.
Navigation Law requires a 100-foot “No Wake” zone, but Virts asks boaters to be aware of historic high water this spring and to be extra cautious and considerate.
“Boaters are urged to stay as far away from the shorelines as possible to reduce damage caused by their boat’s wake," he said. "I ask for boaters’ voluntary compliance with a 'No Wake' zone within 500 feet from any shoreline.”
The Sheriff’s advisory to voluntarily comply with the extended no-wake zone will remain in effect during high water levels and will be monitored weekly by the Sheriff’s Office Marine Patrol.
