United States Senator Kirsten Gillibrand made a visit to Lyons, New York on 21 August 2009 to catch her first glimpse of Wayne County. Sen. Gillibrand was welcomed to Lyons in style by community leaders, members of Lyons' municipal agencies, and participating citizens.
The keystone event of the Senator's stop occurred at the historic Hotchkiss Building, where Mrs. Pat Alena of the Lyons Heritage Society led the Senator through a unique tour of Lyons history. The tour featured a combination of narration and live play-acting to tell the story of the Hotchkiss Essential Oil Company from it's true headquarters, the Peppermint Office. The Hotchkiss Peppermint Oil business was at one time the driving industry in Lyons and a major international exporter on the historic Erie Canal.
