On Thursday 15 October 2009 New York State Canal Corporation Director Carmella R. Mantello paid a visit to the Port of Newark, an Erie Canal stop that is fast becoming a boater's favorite. She met first with Newark Mayor Peter Blandino and others at the village office on East Miller Street before heading over to the Port of Newark and T. Spencer Knight Park.

At the Port of Newark Carmella Mantello applauded the efforts of both the local government and community volunteers for their grassroots work beautifying the Erie Canal, saying that "Newark is a great example of the power of partnerships". Some of the items of interest at T. Spencer Night Park on the Erie Canal in Newark include the Port of Newark Interpretive Center, the Veterans Memorial Bridge murals, and the newly re-finished walkway along the northern embankment.

Next, the Canal Corp. Director et al. visited the Lockville Historic Canal Park project currently underway in East Newark, another partnered effort by the Village of Newark, volunteer organizations, and the chief Lockville Locktender Jolly Roger Straub. Part of the Wayne County Passport Program, Carmella Mantello and longtime East Newark resident Louie DeJohn both made their first official "rubbing" in their respective Wayne County Passport booklets in Lockville. Carmella was so impressed by the Wayne County trails passport--a family wellness initiative spearheaded by Trail Works, Inc. and supported by the Cornell Cooperative Extension and Wegmans Food Markets--that she excitedly said "we're going to somehow replicate this across the whole canal system".
