SUBMITTED by Jerry Ashley, Lyons Main Street Program Manager (1-Apr-2010)

2010 marks the 20th Anniversary of Lyons' Peppermint Days! As our way of supporting the efforts of the Peppermint Days Committee while providing them with additional volunteers, the Lyons Main Street Program will produce the 20th Anniversary Kiddy Parade and the 20th Anniversary Grand Parade. In celebration of the 20th Anniversary, the Lyons Main Street Program is announcing a new and improved staging area as well as a new parade route and new parade concept. Look for $3,000.00 in parade PRIZE money!

This years' theme for both the Kiddy Parade and the Grand Parade is simply "Peppermint". We are asking folks to use their imagination and come up with themed floats and vehicle decorations that will tie into Lyons' "The Peppermint Village" moniker and the "Paint the Village Peppermint" business and residence decorating contest (15 June 2010 - 15 July 2010; judging 1 July 2010). We are also asking all those that turn out for the parades and events during Peppermint Days to wear Red and White to further our celebratory reach. The "Paint the Village Peppermint" contest is extended to all Lyons' businesses and residences and as such, the LMSP is encouraging Lyonites to pull out all the stops to celebrate the 20th Anniversary of Peppermint Days. Prizes will be awarded to the best business and residence decorations carrying out the "Paint the Village Peppermint" promotion.

The Kiddy Parade will be held Friday night, 9 July 2010, and will step off at 6:30 pm. Line-up will begin at 6 pm in the elementary school parking lot and in front of the school on William Street. Prizes will be awarded for best entries. The parade route will step-off on William at Queen Street and head south to a right turn onto Pearl Street. The parade will disperse at Pearl and Broad Street. Remember, the theme is Peppermint!

The 20th Anniversary Peppermint Days Grand Parade will stage along Broad/Maple Streets from the intersection of Broad and Queen to the intersection of Maple and Culver with additional side streets being utilized as necessary. Closing Broad Street at Queen will allow us to double or triple line-up and reduce the amount of traffic on the side streets of Jackson, Sission and Foster. The Grand Parade route will run the full length of William Street from Broad Street to Water Street. Step off is at 7 pm sharp and line-up will begin at 6 pm after the streets have been closed by the Lyons Police Department.

Here is the BIG news--prizes are being awarded for the best band/musical acts/groups in the amount of $1,750.00, FIRST prize and $750.00, SECOND prize. The idea behind this is to spotlight local talent because we know there are groups that don't get acknowledged or enough exposure. THIS IS YOUR CHANCE to show us "what you got" and win some cash. Someone, some group or band, WILL WIN the money!! Here are the rules:

You or your group must be a registered (FREE!) entry to participate in the parade whether marching or riding on a float or on the back of a vehicle. You must agree to perform non-stop while traversing the three full blocks through downtown Lyons (from Queen to Pearl Streets along the William Street route--otherwise known as "The Play Zone"--no exceptions!). Judges will be interspersed in the crowd throughout the "play zone" to judge on ability, style, creativity, and group showmanship. Winners of the musical/band contest will be announced from the reviewing stand approximately 30 minutes after the parade concludes.

For the 20th Anniversary, prize money for floats has increased to $250.00 for first place, $150.00 for second and $100.00 for third. The Lyons Main Street Program extends an invitation to participate to all businesses (hey--free advertising!), organizations (civic, fraternal and religious), car, motorcycle and bicycle groups, dance groups (line dancers, cloggers, Square Dancers, etc.), tractors, carriages, buggies and let's not forget the wacky, fun and wierd entries! Floats will be judged on theme ("Peppermint"), creativity, and execution. Winners of the float entries will be announced from the reviewing stand approximately 30 minutes after the parade concludes.

Entry forms for free particiaption in the parade(s) are available by request to the LMSP office (70 William Street), 315-871-4220 or by visiting the LMSP website at www.lyonsmainstreetprogram.org.
