SUBMITTED by Larry Ann Evans, Museum of Wayne County History (5-May-2010)

The Wayne County Historical Society’s Museum of Wayne County History will be holding History at Night on Thursday, 27 May 2010 at 7:00pm. The speaker will be Loreen Jorgensen and she will be presenting “Stories from the Churches".

Jorgensen was instrumental helping research and set up the Museum of Wayne County History’s new exhibit, “Wayne County and the Burnt-over District”. As she travelled around the county taking photos of the churches and collecting artifacts that were loaned to the exhibit, she also collected many stories from pastors and church volunteers along the way.

“All the stories, there’s good and bad, like black-balling prospective members,” said Jorgensen who went on to say that “some of the churches have lost their history and many are trying valiantly to save it, which is why this exhibit is important.”

The exhibit shows the many religions and religious movements that had major connections to the area and three that even call Wayne County their birthplace--Mormonism, Modern Spiritualism, and the Neversweats. The exhibit runs until 7 August 2010 and examines this part of the “Burnt-over District”, a name inspired by the notion that the area had been so heavily evangelized during antebellum revivalism as to have no “fuel” (unconverted population) left over to “burn” (convert).

The pictures that Jorgensen took are also featured in the exhibit and are projected on the wall. “All the churches have gorgeous stained glass windows and they’re all different,” said Jorgensen.
