For the third year, Marion American Legion Memorial Post 1430 will offer the American Legion Junior Shooting Sports Program to area boys and girls ages 12 through 18.  The program is a gun safety education and marksmanship program.

The beginning class will start on Sunday, September 26, 10 am to 1 pm with Introduction and Safety Class held at the Legion Post on Witherden Rd., Marion.  The introductory class will consist of basic firearm handling safety operation and range safety proceedures.  After the classroom instruction and safety exam there will be 30-45 minutes of live firing practice on the post range using .177 competition air rifles.  Regular practice is slated to begin Wednesday, September 29 at 7 pm.

Gun safety and markismanship are taught through short lecture, discussion and hands-on activities.  Chairman Kevin Southcott and certified instructors Dennis Bristol and Teresa Ford use handbooks designed to cover all fundamentals of position shooting and administer quizzes and a final exam.  Intra- and inter-club, regional, state and national competitions in the American Legion Junior Three-position Air Rifle competitions are important aspects of training.

Last year, the Marion Marksmen Shooting Team placed 4th in the state with one silver medal winner in state championship competition held in March 2010.  In addition, one member is credited with 2009-10 High Score (overall) in the 8-county Department New York American Legion 7th district.

For more information about the program call Marion American Legion at 315 926-5571 or Kevin Southcott at 315 576-6382.

Very cool. Does the American Legion also engage in the Junior USA Shooting Team patch program? I recall eyeballing that patch when I was younger because I wanted one.
