It’s easy to win the Great Pearl Street Pumpkin Race: pick a fast pumpkin, dress it up nicely and enter it at PumpkinPalooza on Saturday, October 23rd at the Lyons Village Park.  The race, to be held at 3 p.m., is part of a full day of celebrating autumn and our agricultural heritage with harvest-themed games, food, exhibits, crafts, dance and great music. The day begins with the Farmers’ Market and winds up with the Halloween costume parade and a showing of the movie, “The Lady in White” at 7:30 p.m.
The Great Pumpkin Race offers participants two chances to win.  First, there is the “Best-Dressed” contest, where, for a $1 entry fee, participants bring in their pumpkins, decorated with paint, markers, stickers or whatever you please.  Photographs will be taken for judging purposes and the pumpkin returned.  Anyone who forgets to decorate may, for an additional fee, use supplies at the booth to dress up their entry. The winner will be announced at the conclusion of the costume parade and will win half of the amount received in entry fees.  Judges for the event will be the Lyons Youth Ambassadors.
Next, it’s on to the race.  Participating pumpkins will register, receive a number and be transported to the top of Pearl Street, where the pumpkins will be turned loose to speed down the hill.  The first one to the finish line wins money equal to half the entry fees for the race.
The Great Pearl Street Pumpkin Race is organized by the Lyons Youth Ambassadors and all proceeds benefit the future activities of the Youth Ambassadors.  A video of last year’s pumpkin race may be seen on their Facebook page.
PumpkinPalooza is sponsored by the band, “Reflections”, Lyons National Bank, WCAP Goal ChaserZ, the Ohmann Theatre and the Lyons Main Street Program.  For more information about this or other PumpkinPalooza events, please check out lyonsmainstreetprogram.org or call 315-871-4220.
