After a strong win in the team Section V Class BB quarterfinals on Tuesday, Newark got close but couldn’t quite get past Mercy on Wednesday, losing a very tight 3-2 decision at  the Shadow Lake Country Club.

The outcome was in doubt until the final  match of the evening. Newark co-captain Allison Wilck won at First Singles, 6-0, 6-1, and in Second Doubles, Kelsey Rossignol and Kelly Eberle got a win, 6-4, 6-2.
But Katelyn Zonneville and Meghann Dygert lost at second and third singles, respectively, and that meant the fate of Newark’s further sectionals competition lay in the hands of Elizabeth Erway and Lindsay Ochs, in First Doubles.

“Our players fought back after the first set and were leading the second before bowing out, 5-7, in the final set, on some tough breaks on numerous close points,” said Newark coach Jack Fisher. “Congratulations to our girls on some outstanding play as a team and their winning season. Good luck to the team next week, as the individual Sectional competition begins for the 22 teams and 32 players in each of the brackets for first and second singles, and first and second doubles. All-day competition begins Monday morning.”
