Allison Wilck

By John Addyman

NEWARK – The afternoon began with coach Jack Fisher honoring the six seniors who might be in their last competition on the home court…it ended with the Lady Reds smothering a game Eastridge squad, 5-0, and earning a trip to the Section V Class BB tennis semifinals.

The Reds were the number three seed, and grabbed home court advantage over the sixth-seeded Lady Lancers. It was the eighth time this season Newark has taken a match on its home court.

Senior co-captain Allison Wilck got things started with a 6-0, 6-3 win over Eastridge’s Emily Piarentini in First Singles. At Second Singles, Newark co-captain Katelyn Zonneville and Marissa DiGregorio had the longest volleys of the meet with both girls playing well back from the net and firing shots across the expanse between them. Zonneville prevailed, 6-1, 6-1 in gaining her ninth win of the season.
Third singles belonged to Newark’s Meghann Dygert, who won 6-4, 6-1 in what Fisher termed “an outstanding match” with Taylor Michels, who was ahead in the first set.
In doubles, Kelsey Rossignol and Kelly Eberle rook a 6-1, 5-1 win at First Doubles, setting the stage for the sweep, which was accomplished by Elizabeth Erway and Lindsay Ochs, who subdued Lancers Haley Biemiller and Samantha Gaser, 6-1, 6-1. Fisher said after the meet he had chosen Erway and Ochs as his “players of the week.”
