President Theodore Roosevelt

The popular Newark Public Library Book Review Luncheons are back after a break for Lent. The May 13 luncheon will feature Father Peter Clifford who will review Colonel Roosevelt. Written by Edmund Morris, this is the third and final volume of Morris’s biography of Theodore Roosevelt, the 26th President of the United States, who was age 42 when elected, and is still the youngest to ever hold the office.

Said President Woodrow Wilson of Roosevelt: "He is a great big boy. There is a sweetness about him that is very compelling. You can't resist the man. I can easily understand why his followers follow him."

The 800 page book "Colonel Roosevelt" begins with an account of the yearlong safari Roosevelt embarked on in east Africa soon after leaving office, and ends with his death in 1919 at the age of 60. Morris’s writing style places you at the scene and in the mind of the former President, who after leaving the office preferred to be called “Colonel.”

Reviewer Father Peter Clifford is the former Priest of St. Michael’s Church in Newark and is now Priest of St. John’s of Rochester in Fairport.

*Reservations for the May 13 luncheon are a must and should be made at the library by Wednesday, May 11. The cost for lunch is $4.50 and includes homemade apple pie. All proceeds benefit the Friends of the Newark Public Library
