SUBMITTED by Maureen Weidman, Cornell Cooperative Extension of Wayne County (12-Apr-2011)

Spring Breastfeeding Classes are scheduled to begin Wednesday evenings at 6:30 pm starting April 13, 2011 at Cornell Cooperative Extension, 1581 Route 88N, Newark.

This week's topic is Maternal Nutrition which will focus on balanced nutrition for a healthy pregnancy and healthy mom.

Over the last year we have been privileged to develop a series of ongoing breastfeeding classes to educate moms, dads, grandmothers, and other support people about the importance of breastfeeding, how to breastfeed, how to talk to their health care providers about breastfeeding, how to have a healthy pregnancy, what to expect after the baby is born, “wearing” your baby, when to introduce other foods, and many other topics.

All but one of the mothers who have attended classes has initiated breastfeeding after birth, which far exceeds the Healthy 2010 goal of 75% breastfeeding initiation. One mother of twins is successfully breastfeeding both children at 17 months. Mothers and babies have been assisted with breastfeeding in the hospital and their homes to resolve latch issues, engorgement, pumping and storing breastmilk, going back to work, and many other issues.

The dads, grandmothers, and other support people who have attended are wonderful support for the mothers and babies because of what they learn in the classes. They have called on behalf of the very tired mom to get the support she needs.

Two of the moms from the Fall class have been a great support to each other during their challenging first weeks after birth in addition to breastfeeding assistance from CCE. This is a wonderful benefit of the classes and is very much encouraged.

Graduates of the classes have experienced satisfactory pregnancies, births, and breastfeeding experiences resulting in very happy, healthy babies because…it’s the normal way to feed their babies.

You are welcome to attend at any time for information and support. If the classes are not convenient, another time can be set up that is most convenient for you. Please call 315-331-8415 x205 to learn what we have to offer or register for classes.

We look forward to meeting you!
