Sunnking, Zeller Corporation & 13WHAM Recycle 273,153 lbs. Of Electronics In 6.5 Hours

The official numbers are finally in. On June 18th, Sunnking, Zeller Corporation and 13WHAM-TV teamed up for Electronics Recycling Day 2011 to help Rochester residents recycle their old electronics responsibly and raise money for the Wilmot Cancer Center and Foodlink. A total of 273,153 lbs. of old, broken, used, and unwanted electronics were collected and $2,850 was donated to the Wilmot Cancer Center from residents driving through the event.
“It amazes us to see the support people provide for an event of this magnitude. We were overwhelmed with the community's support for the Wilmot Cancer Center as this fundraiser means a lot to us,” says Gary Haseley, CEO of Zeller Corporation.
In 2009, volunteers worked for a total of 26 hours at two locations and collected approximately 240,000 pounds of electronics. This year, the event lasted for 6½ hours at Zeller Corporation on University Ave. and 273,153 pounds of e-scrap was collected during one of the largest (if not largest) e-scrap collection events in the state. Over 3,000 cars came through the event and 60 volunteers were there to unload and package the collected electronics as they came through.
“It was hot, hectic, and there was a lot of heavy lifting,” says Zachary Hussion, Sunnking’s Director of Marketing. “The teamwork between Sunnking, Zeller, and 13WHAM was outstanding and was the driving force behind the success of the event. As a result we created a friendly and convenient system for Rochester residents to keep their electronics out of our waste streams. Our goal was to maximize efficiency this year through improved logistical planning and marketing efforts. At the 2009 event we collected 9,231 lbs./hr. compared to 42,024 lbs./hr. in 2011…a 355% increase in lbs./hr. is a number that everyone involved should be very proud of.”
For every pound of e-scrap that is collected from residential recycling events in Monroe County, Sunnking makes a monetary donation to Foodlink courtesy of the We-Cycle Donation Program (http://www.sunnking.com/wecycle-donation-program/). Sunnking has collected nearly 500,000 lbs. of electronics so far this year from residents in Monroe County alone dedicated to the We-Cycle Donation Program.
“All of us at 13WHAM are really pleased to be able to spread the word about such a valuable service to our viewers,” says Chuck Samuels Vice President & General Manager of Channel 13 WHAM-TV “We are also extremely happy to have Sunnking and Zeller as our partners for this event.”
