The Newark Pilots (14-12) ended their three game losing streak as they defeated the Watertown Wizards (10-16) 8-5 at Colburn Park on Friday night.

Newark got the game started, as they put up the first few runs of the game in the first three innings. In the bottom of the first inning with a man on third base and one out in the inning, the first baseman Brent Langston (Delta State) singled through the right side of the infield allowing Joe Landi (Univ. of Rhode Island) to make his way home. The Pilots extended their lead in the bottom of the third inning as they added two more runs. Landi and Langston again worked as a dynamic duo, as Langston drove in Landi on a sacrifice fly to centerfield. While on third base and one out in the inning, second baseman Josh Perez (Mississippi College) scored home on Adam Grace’s fielder’s choice after forcing a wild throw by Watertown’s second baseman.

The Wizards were able to work some magic in the fourth and fifth innings. In the fourth with a man on third and one out, Chris Glynn (UW Parkside) singled in Jordan Enos (Holy Cross) to cut their deficit to 3-1. In the fifth inning, Derek Hagy (Texas Pan American) tied the score as he hit a two run shot over the right field wall; Donald Walter (Cal Poly Pomona) scored on the homer.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, Newark cast their own spell on Watertown, scoring five with two outs to take a 8-3 lead. Ben Bostick (St. John Fisher College) blasted a triple into right-center giving Tyler McDonald (Millersville Univ.) the chance to score from first. The starting right fielder eventually scored on a Landi single hit through the right side. Grace capped off the inning with a three run double to left-center; Landi, Perez, and Langston all scored.

Watertown cut their deficit to four as they added one run in the top of the seventh inning. Hagy earned his third RBI of the night as he drove in Walter after hitting a double.

Cullen Babin (Delta State) got the start for Newark, as he earned his first win of the regular season. The righty pitched six innings, as he allowed three earned runs on seven hits while striking out a game high six.

Nick Bradley (Western Michigan) started the game for Watertown earning the loss; his season record is now 2-2. The righty worked six innings, giving up eight runs, three earned, on 11 hits while striking three and walking one batter. Walter and Hagy contributed five of Watertown’s 11 hits and combined for four of their five runs with two apiece. Newark’s first four hitters propelled the team as they combined for eight of 13 hits, and six of their eight runs

Newark will travel to Oneonta to take on the Outlaws at Damaschke Field for a game time of 7:05 p.m. The Wizards will travel to Glenns Falls to take on the Golden Eagles at East Field Stadium for a game time of 7:00 p.m.
