The Newark Pilots (23-19) defeated the Elmira Pioneers (16-25) 6-4 Wednesday night at Colburn Park.

Newark rallied in the eighth inning to regain the lead, as they scored two runs to make the score 5-4. With the bases loaded, Logan provided the go ahead hit as he singled up the middle, scoring Cash Barker (Texas A&M Kingsville) and Josh Crowdus (Delta State).

The Pilots scored the game’s first run in the bottom of the second inning. While standing on second base with two outs in the inning, Chris Doyle (UC Davis) made a smart base running decision as he rounded third to score home as Elmira’s defense was focused on trying to get batter Joe Landi (Univ. of Rhode Island) out at first on an infield single.

Newark added their second run of the game in the very next home half of the inning. With runners on second and third and one out, Brent Langston (Delta State) grounded out to second.

The Pioneers put up their first run of the game in the top of the fourth inning. With a man on third base and two outs in the inning, the catcher Spencer Brann (UC Davis) singled up the middle, allowing the runner Steven Patterson (San Jaoquin Delta) to score.

With two outs in the bottom of the fifth inning, Austin Logan (UC Davis) added another run for the home team. The lefty doubled down the right field line, but a throwing error from the right fielder allowed Logan to hustle his way home to give the Pilots a 3-1 lead.

Elmira’s Brann once again led the offense for the visiting team as he hit a two run homerun over the center field wall. His hit tied the score at 4 apiece in the top of the sixth inning.

The visitors took the 4-3 lead in the top of the seventh inning. With the bases loaded the center fielder Kendall Konopka (Arizona Christian) flied out to center field, allowing runner Aaron Nardone (Delaware State) to score.

Pilots built their lead in the bottom of the eighth, scoring one for the 6-4 lead. Ben Bostick (St. John Fisher College) hit a ball towards the opposing shortstop, who let the ball get past him, allowing Landi to score home from second.

Austin McAuliffe (NJIT) earned the win for the team, as he came in as a reliever. He earned his fourth win as he went two full innings, giving up one earned run on one hit. The lefty struck out three and walked two. John Melville (New Haven) earned the loss for Elmira. The righty pitched six and one-third innings as he gave up five runs, two earned, on eight hits. He struck out four and walked three. Cullen Babin (Delta State) earned his second save of the season.

Logan and Landi led the Pilots with two hits apiece. Logan recorded two RBI while scoring once himself. Landi recorded one RBI and run as well. Brann and Ty Yesensky (Old Dominion) led the Pioneers with two hits apiece. Brann provided most of the runs, as he batted in three of the team’s four runs.

Newark will be home again at Colburn Park Thursday night as they will host the Albany Dutchmen for a game time start of 7:05 p.m. The Pioneers will travel back to Elmira as they will host Oneonta Thursday night at Duffy Fairgrounds for a game time start of 7:05.
