PILOTS/RED WINGS SPLIT DOUBLE HEADER Newark and Geneva Each Win One in Double Header at Colburn Park

NEWARK, NY (7.27.17) – The Newark Pilots and Geneva Red Wings split a double header at Colburn Park.  Geneva took game one 4-0 to improve their record to 28-19.  Alex Bellardini (Youngstown State) picked up his sixth win, going 6 scoreless frames, striking out 3.  Chris Vitale (Erie CC) took the loss.  In game two, Newark won 6-4 to improve their record to 19-28.  Kyle Griffen (Louisiana Tech) picked up the win in relief, pitching 4 innings, striking out 5.  Stephen Larson (Iowa Wesleyan) took the loss.

The Red Wings got the game one scoring started in the top of the first.  TJ Byrd (Rend Lake) led off the game with a walk off of Vitale, he then moved to second on a Dominic Toso (Bucknell Commit) sacrifice bunt.  Byrd would score on a Will Simoneit (Cornell) single to take a 1-0 lead.

In the top of the third, the Red Wings doubled their lead.  Toso led the inning off with an infield single, he then moved to third on a Mikey Arman (Kenyon) double.  Simoneit drove him in for his second RBI, and the games second run, to take a 2-0 lead.

Geneva doubled their lead in the top of the fifth.  After Vitale retired the first two batters in the frame, the Red Wings started a two-out rally.  A Toso walk, Arman single, and Simoneit single loaded the bases with two outs.  The next batter, Joseph Tassin (Bossier Parish CC) lined a single up the middle to drive in Toso from third.  Arman would come around to score on the play on an error from Pilots center fielder Mark McKenna (Canisius) to give Geneva a 4-0 lead.

The 4-0 lead was all Bellardini would need in game one.  He scattered four singles over six innings of work, while striking out three.  Tyler Key (Mendocino) pitched a scoreless, 1-2-3 bottom of the seventh to end the game.

In the bottom of the first of game two, the Pilots would finally get into the run column.  McKenna led off the frame with a walk, then moved to second on a Hunter Wells (Tyler JC) single.  McKenna would come around to score on a Will Allocca (Virginia) one-out single to give the Pilots an early 1-0 lead.

In the Pilots half of the second, they would add more.  Jonathan Parker (Jones County JC) led the inning off with a first pitch double off of Larson, then moved to third on a fielders choice, groundout from Josh Loeffler (UConn).  Parker would score on a Zach Santoro (Notre Dame College) single to make it 2-0.  McKenna doubled the score when he took Larson deep, for his first home run of the summer.  Santoro also came around to score on the HR to give the Pilots a 4-0 lead.

In the top of the third, the Red Wings would cut the lead in half off of Pilots starter Alec Teska (St. John’s Fisher).  Matt Chamberlain (New Haven) led the inning off with a walk, then moved to second when Toso was hit by a Teaka pitch.  Chamberlain came around to score on an Arman single.  After Simoneit was hit by a pitch, Tassin lofted a sacrifice fly to left to drive in Toso to cut the lead to 4-2.

The Pilots answered the call in their half of the third.  On the first pitch of the inning from Larson, Allocca took him deep off of the Colburn Park scoreboard in left, to give the Pilots a 5-2 lead.  In the top of the fourth, Geneva got that run back when Ben Terwilliger (Maine Commit) led off the inning with a walk, moved to second on a wild pitch, then scored on a Justin Etts (NJIT) single to make it 5-3.  The Etts single knocked Teska out of the game two batters into the fourth.

The Pilots would add an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth.  Parker led the inning off with a walk, and Loeffler moved him over with a single.  The next batter, Santoro, laid down a bunt, the pitcher, Domenic Nardone (Siena) tried to get the lead runner at third, but over threw Tassin, and Parker came around to score on an E1 to extend the Pilots lead to 6-3.

Geneva would make it interesting in the top of the seventh off Griffen.  Arman led the inning off with a single, then moved to second on a Tassin single.  Arman would come around to score on a Justice Bigbie (Western Carolina) single.  With the tying run on first, the Red Wings sent up a pinch hitter, Will Hampson (Southwest Tennessee CC) to face Griffen.  On a 3-2 count, Griffen got Hampson to ground into a game ending, 4-6-3 double play.

Newark will travel to Onondaga tomorrow to play the Flames at 7:05.  Geneva will play at Elmira.

PILOTS DOMINATE PIONEERS TO WIN THIRD STRAIGHT Pilots turn early 9-0 lead into first three game win streak of summer

Submitted by:  Newark Pilots

NEWARK, NY (7.19.17) – The Newark Pilots picked up their 14th win of the year with a 9-4 win over the Elmira Pioneers to improve their record to 14-26.  The loss drops the Pios to 21-19.  This was all Pilots from the start, after leading 9-0 after five, the Pios got 4 in the top of the sixth, but the Newark bullpen worked three scoreless innings in relief.  Adam Donovan (DeSales) picks up his second win and Bryce Zaparzynski (Mansfield) picked up his second loss.

The Pilots started off the scoring in the bottom of the first to go up 4-0.  After Zaparzynski loaded the bases with one out, Pilots Prospect Game representative Over Torres (Yavapai CC) lined a single to score Mark McKenna (Canisius) and Pilots All-Star Game representative Hunter Wells (Tyler JC) to open the scoring.  After a ground out for out number two, Zach Santoro (Notre Dame College) hit a single to score Pilots Prospect Game representative Will Allocca (Virginia) and Torres to double up the score.  Zaparzynski was pulled after just two-thirds of an inning.

After a scoreless second and third, the Pilots added 3 in the fourth.  Wells drove in Michael O’Connor (Buffalo) with a walk, Allocca drove in McKenna when he beat out the return throw of a double play, and Torres drove in Graham Hackbarth (Pearl River CC) with an infield single.  The Pilots took a 7-0 lead into the fifth.
They would extend the lead to 9-0 in their half of the fifth.  D’Marcus Guillory (Motlow State CC) drove in O’Connor with a double on a 3-0 count for run number 8, and Hackbarth drove in Guillory on a sacrifice fly to deep center field for run number 9.

After working 5 scoreless innings, Donovan ran into some trouble in the sixth.  After giving up a lead off double to Pioneers Prospect Game representative Brayden Combs (Kentucky), Donovan retired the next two hitters.  After a walk to Pios Prospect Game representative Andrew Orzel (Wofford) and a single to Devon Adams (Old Dominion), the bases were loaded with two outs.  Unlike what Donovan was able to do in the fifth, strand the bases loaded, he gave up a two run single to All-Star Brett Rodriguez (Wofford) scoring Combs and Orzel to put the Pios on the board.  On the next pitch, he gave up a two run triple to All-Star Troy Dixon (Samford) into the left-center field gap to score Adams and Rodriguez to cut the lead to 9-4.

That’s all the scoring either team would do the rest of the night.  In the top of the eighth, the Pios threatened after Eddie Fournier (Cypress) loaded the bases with three walks and two outs, but a strikeout to Combs ended that threat.

In the bottom of the eighth, 2017 Home Run Derby Champion and All-Star Conor Grammes (Xavier) came out of the pen for the Pios and struck out the side in order.  Kyle Griffen (Louisiana Tech) came in to pitch the top of the ninth, and matched Grammes by striking out the side in order to end the game.

Pilots Notables: McKenna- 2-3, 2 runs, 2 walks.  Torres- 2-5, 3 RBI’s, 1 run, 2 k’s.  Santoro- 2-3, 2 RBI’s, 1 walk.  Fournier/Griffen- 3 strikeouts each.

Pioneers Notables: Rodriguez- 1-3, 2 RBI’s, 1 run, 2 walks, 2 k’s.  Dixon- 1-5, 1 triple, 2 RBI’s, 1 k.  Combs- 2-5, 1 double, 1 k.  Jackson Tedder (Virginia)/Grammes- 3 strikeouts each.

Newark will host Jamestown tomorrow at 7:05.  Elmira is off.

The Red Wings were led by first baseman Will Simoneit (Cornell University) who finished the day 2-4 with four RBI.

Simoneit’s first hit of the day was a two-run single in the third inning off Onondaga starter Zach Kemp (Wells College).  The single gave the Red Wings a 3-1 lead.

Kemp was given the loss (0-3) after an up and down day on the mound.  In four and one third innings he allowed five runs on five hits while striking out four.

“I don’t think he threw poorly.  He got behind in some counts and [that] kind of gets him into trouble,” said head coach Ryan Stevens.  “He’s got good stuff, he’s got a good arm.  He’s coming along and he’s 19 years old, that’s a young pitcher.”

Ben Terwilliger (University of Maine) earned his first win of the season allowing four runs (three earned) in five innings of work while striking out three.

Terwilliger also drove in a run with an RBI single in the second inning as Geneva gave up its designated hitter to allow him to bat.

PILOTS BEGIN PRACTICE AHEAD OF 2017 SEASON OPENER Head Coach John Mayotte gearing up for 2017 season

Submitted by: Newark Pilots

NEWARK, NY (May 29, 2017) – The Newark Pilots began practice at Colburn Park over the holiday weekend.  The Pilots are getting ready for their 2017 Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League season home opener on Thursday.  First year head coach John Mayotte is using this practice time to learn the strengths and weaknesses of his new players.
“I would hate to walk out there the first game today or tomorrow,” stated Coach Mayotte.  “There’s just no way will be able to manufacture all the information that goes into learning new players, what they can do, what they can’t do and that type thing, it’s a whole different perspective, and that’s the nature of summer baseball.”
The 2017 Pilots roster features players from 16 states, plus players from Taiwan, Mexico City, and Ontario.
“I’m seeing some things, and I’m proud to say that the competitiveness is what I love and we’re trying to get some toughness in the kids now, pushing them a little bit, but not hurting them or anything,” Mayotte added.
Mayotte’s assistant coaches include Franklin Bush from the University of Buffalo, and Bennett Schiltz from Frostburg State University.
“The assistant coaches are the strength of your program,” stated Mayotte.  “And we’ve got some young kids that are learning to play, like a lot of those reps today were pretty well executed.”
Coach Mayotte is no stranger to the PGCBL, serving as Head Coach of the Glens Falls franchise for 10 seasons from 2004-13.  Mayotte led Glens Falls to four division titles and won 263 games with the club.  He has also earned two Coach of the Year Awards.

The Newark Pilots will begin their 2017 PGCBL season at Colburn Park on Thursday, June 1st at 7:05pm against the Oneonta Outlaws.

Newark Pilots Earn Walk-Off Win Over Saugerties

The Newark Pilots (23-18) saved the drama for the ninth inning in a 7-6 walk-off victory over Saugerties on Monday night at Colburn Park. The win is the Pilots second walk-off of the season and now moves them into a tie with Jamestown for third place in the West division with nine regular season games remaining.

The Pilots fell behind early after starter Sam Harrington (Itawamba C.C.) struggled to keep the ball down in the first inning, allowing three runs on four hits. However, Harrington would settle into a nice groove after that, throwing the next three innings without allowing a hit.

Newark would respond with a sacrifice fly from Sam Fragale (Virginia Tech) in the bottom of the inning to cut into the deficit. Fragale would add another RBI with a single in the third inning, which was followed by a Chris Whelan sacrifice fly to tie the game at 3-3.

Will Gorman (RIT) would hit a solo home run on the first pitch of the fourth inning to give the Pilots a 4-3 lead. The home run was Gorman’s first of the year, but it extended his Pilots team-record as the sixth of his career.

“Well it felt great hitting a home run, obviously it always does,” Gorman said of the home run. “I’ve been feeling good the last couple of games and if figured if I have my timing down I might as well be aggressive. The first pitch was there in and I just put good wood on it.”

The Stallions would get to Harrington again in the fifth with a sacrifice fly, followed by a two-run home run from Michael Pfenninger (Manhattan) to make the score 6-4.

However, the Pilots would storm back to take the lead once again with a bases-clearing three-run triple from Bo-Hao Huang (Fu Jen Catholic) in the seventh inning.

With the Pilots leading 7-6 entering the ninth, closer Brian Dolan gave up an unearned run to blow his first save of the season on a single from Caleb Kerbs (Maine) to tie the game at 7-7.

Darian Herncane (Binghamton) reached base on an infield single with one out in the bottom of the ninth. Herncane would then steal second to put himself into scoring position with Russ Olive (UMass-at the plate. Olive would drive home the winning run on a single hit up the middle with Herncane scoring on a close play at the plate to win the game.

“Dolan is our guy at the end of games,” Pilots head coach Chris Edmondson said. “He pitched well tonight and just had some unfortunate things happen. The guys know that and they were able to rally and get a run to pick him up and get the win.”

The Pilots continue their playoff push with a home against Utica on Tuesday at 7:05 p.m. at Colburn Park.

Newark, N.Y. – The Newark Pilots continue to build their roster for the 2016 Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League (PGCBL) season with the addition of Niagara University Purple Eagles Greg Cullen and Julian Gallup.

Both Cullen and Gallup are in the midst of breakout seasons for a rising Niagara program, a member of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC).

Cullen has found a home as a table setter, batting second in the lineup for the Purple Eagles. In his freshman season, he’s batting .276 with a .344 on-base percentage. The shortstop has accumulated 32 hits, eight doubles, 17 runs scored, and 10 RBIs. He has also displayed tremendous patience at the plate by working out 13 walks. The 5-foot-10, 160-pound rookie began his collegiate career with an eight-game on-base streak, which included a season-long six-game hit streak. Cullen has a trio of three-hit outings, most recently doing so in a 4-3 victory over St. Bonaventure. In that game on March 22, he finished 3-for-5 with the game-winning RBI in the ninth.

Originally from nearby Penfield, N.Y., Cullen was a two-sport athlete at McQuaid Jesuit High School in Rochester, N.Y., where he lettered in both baseball and basketball. He guided the Knights to a Section V Class AA championship in 2015, batting .472 with a .639 on-base percentage. He collected 34 hits, 32 runs, and flashed his wheels by swiping 18 bags as a senior. Cullen capped off his high school career by being named to the All-Greater Rochester and All-New York State First Teams.

Julian Gallup

The fleet-footed Gallup will a dimension of power and speed to the Newark lineup this summer. The second-year outfielder has started all 28 games for the Purple Eagles, ranking third among starters with a .326 batting average. Among his 29 hits are a team-leading three home runs. He’s also 7-for-8 in stolen bases. Perhaps Gallup’s best outing of the season came in the series with MAAC opponent Saint Peter’s College. In the first of a three-game set, the 6-foot-1 outfielder went 2-for-4 with a double and a three-run homer, registering season highs with five RBIs and four runs scored. As a freshman, Gallup made 38 appearances, recording a .324 on-base percentage with 15 walks, 15 runs scored, and eight hits.

A two-time All-New York State selection, Gallup was a tremendously gifted three-sport athlete at Amsterdam High School. His high school baseball coach was Brian Spagnola, the president and general manager of the Amsterdam Mohawks. Under Spagnola's tutelage, Gallup hit at a combined .381 clip with 43 runs and 30 RBIs in his junior and senior campaigns. Additionally, he swiped a total of 35 bases in his final two prep seasons. That speed on the basepath translated well to the track, where Gallup won a state title in the 4x400-meter relay as a senior, the same year he quarterbacked the Rugged Rams football team.

The Newark Pilots open the 2016 PGCBL season on the road on Wednesday, June 1, against the Jamestown Jammers. The home opener at historic Colburn Park is scheduled for Friday, June 3, at 7:05 p.m. against the Geneva Red Wings. Standout infielders Brendan Harrison and Jordan Swiss will join right-handed pitcher Jacob Hendricks and outfielder Adam Turner on the Newark roster this summer.
Harrison, a junior, returns to Saginaw Valley after appearing in all 41 games as a sophomore. Through the first 11 games of the season, he leads the Cardinals with a tremendous .500/.553/.735 slash line, with his average ranking second in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC). The 6-foot-2, 245-pound first baseman has six multi-hit games, including a pair of three-hit outings against Kentucky State University on February 27 and Erskine College on March 8.
Swiss has made an immediate impact on the Cardinals’ lineup in his rookie season, registering a .410 batting average and opening his career on an 11-game hit streak. The first-year shortstop has a team-high 16 RBIs – third-most in the GLIAC – and is tied for the team lead in runs scored (14). In that game, an 18-0 drubbing of the Thorobreds, Swiss clubbed his first career homer and registered a season-best five RBIs.
A 6-foot-2 righty, Hendricks recorded a perfect 2-0 record with a 3.96 ERA in nine appearances as a freshman in 2015. He fanned 19 batters in 25.0 innings of work. Hendricks earned his two victories in consecutive starts against the University of Findlay and Ashland University last April. So far this season, the sophomore has made two appearances, striking out three in four relief innings. He tossed a pair of scoreless innings last time out against Montreat College.
Fellow sophomore Turner transferred to Saginaw Valley after spending his freshmen season at Shawnee State University, an NAIA institution in Portsmouth, Ohio. He made 35 starts in his rookie campaign, compiling a .219 batting average with four doubles, one triple, and two homers. On March 22, 2015, Turner launched a first-pitch grand slam in the seventh inning against the University of Pikeville. The Lansing, Mich., native made his first start of 2016 against Montreat on March 10 and finished with a double and three RBIs.

PGCBL announces postseason changes

The 2016 PGCBL postseason will look a little different than in years past.

Starting this summer, the PGCBL postseason will feature four teams from each division. In the new playoff format, the No. 4 seed and the No. 1 seed will square off in a one-game playoff and will face off against the winner of the one-game playoff between the No. 3 and No. 2 seeds. The winner of each one-game playoff will proceed to the East Division Championship and West Division Championship Series, respectively.

The higher seed in each divisional championship round will host games one and three while the lower seed hosts game two. The winners of the best-of-three league championship series will meet in the PGCBL Championship Series.

In the PGCBL Championship Series, the lower seed—based on regular season record—will host game one, while the higher seed will host games two and three.

The 2016 PGCBL postseason will begin on Monday, Aug. 1. The league championship series are tentatively scheduled for Aug. 2-4, while the PGCBL Championship Series is tentatively scheduled for Aug. 6-8.

The move comes after the league added three new teams this offseason in the Oneonta Outlaws, the Geneva Red Wings and most recently, the Jamestown Jammers. The Outlaws will compete in the East Division, meaning the East will have six teams while the Red Wings and Jammers will be in the seven-team West Division.

The full 2016 PGCBL schedule will be released later this offseason.

The PGCBL is affiliated with Perfect Game USA, the largest independent baseball scouting service in the United States.

Wiktorski was a chosen to the 12-member All-League First Team after a record-breaking campaign at the plate this summer.

A rising senior at St. John Fisher College, Wiktorski finished among the Newark leaders in nearly every offensive category. He was also second in batting average (.312) and runs scored (28), and fourth in stolen bases (14).

The 2015 PGCBL All-Star slugged his way into team and league record books. In addition, Wiktorski’s four triples and four homers were each one shy of the Newark single-season mark.

On defense, Wiktorski led all shortstops with 123 assists and was second with 64 putouts.

The Penfield, N.Y., native began the summer with a solo home run in the season-opening win at Saugerties on June 3. On June 7, he compiled his first of two four-hit games, going 4-for-5 with four runs scored against Elmira. Wiktorski was crowned the PGCBL Player of the Week for the week of July 13-19. That week, he batted .414 and slugged a league-best .897. In a 13-3 win over the Elmira on July 14, Wiktorski drove in a season-high five runs. He plated the game-winning runs with a three-run double on July 17 against Glens Falls. He then went 4-for-5 with two doubles and a homer on July 18 in Elmira before hitting his second three-run shot in as many days on July 19 in Victor.

Wiktorski is the 24th Newark Pilot in the organization’s five seasons to be honored by the PGCBL as an All-League player. He is the second St. John Fisher College player to earned All-League accolades for the Pilots, joining two-time All-PGCBL Second-Team selection Justin D’Amato (2011, 2013).

The Newark offense scored one run in the first and three more in the second to give Imbro the lead. Victor starter John Saviano (NJIT) walked Kyle Norman (San Francisco) with one away, and one batter later, Norman came around to score on an error by RailRiders shortstop Aaron Endres (Norfolk).

In the second inning, Will Gorman (RIT) plated Michael Lanza (Bryant) with a base hit. Following a single by Kyle Bartelman (Columbia), Blake Valley (San Francisco) found the gap in left center for a two-run triple, making it 4-0 Newark.

With the lead, Imbro breezed through the Victor side in order in the third, fourth and seventh innings.

Saviano was handed the complete-game loss as he surrendered four runs (three earned) on nine hits and three walks. He also punched out three batters as he fell to 3-4 on the season.

Game 2

It wasn’t easy but Victor closer Chris Kemp (Indiana Univ. Southeast) recorded his seventh save - tied for the league lead - with a scoreless seventh inning. Free passes to Gorman and Bartelman and a base hit by James Baer (Delta) loaded the bases with one out. Kemp responded by striking out Lanza on three pitches and Valley on four to secure the 4-1 win in the nightcap.

Trailing by two in the bottom of the fourth, Cody Wiktorski (St. John Fisher) doubled and scored on a Willy Yahn (UConn) hit to cut the deficit in half, 2-1. However, three consecutive hits, including a two-run triple by Mark Cardinalli (UC Davis), extended the RailRiders’ lead back to three runs in the fifth.

Austin Wilson (LSU-Alexandria) improved to 2-1 with five innings of three-hit ball for the RailRiders. He struck out four while giving up one run before giving way to Dylan Swetman (Le Moyne) and Kemp out of the bullpen.
.
Newark starter Clayton Spiker (Saginaw Valley State) was taxed for four runs (three earned) on seven hits and four walks while fanning three batters. The loss was his fifth straight as he fell to 2-6.

The Pilots are home for the remainder of the regular season, beginning with a 7:05 p.m. matchup against the West Division regular-season champions, the Elmira Pioneers (32-15), on Tuesday, July 28 at Colburn Park. Victor, which has secured the second seed in the West, hosts Utica in a doubleheader on Tuesday beginning at 3 p.m.

Six-run third inning leads Pilots past Pios, 8-3

Submitted by:  Leslie Ohmann, Newark Pilots

NEWARK, N.Y. – The Newark Pilots downed the West Division-leading Elmira Pioneers by a final of 8-3 on Senator Mike Nozzolio Night at Colburn Park on Wednesday.

With the victory, the Pilots (16-25) remain two games out of the third and final playoff spot in the Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League’s (PGCBL) West Division. Utica (18-23) sits in third place while Adirondack (16-24) maintains a half-game advantage for fourth.

Newark batted around in the six-run third inning to turn a 1-0 deficit into a lead it would never relinquish. Nick Wegmann (Binghamton) walked to lead off the inning and scored the tying run on a Blake Valley (San Francisco) sac fly. Two batters later, Cody Wiktorski (St. John Fisher) singled to load the bases. Mark Martin (Le Moyne) drove in a run with an RBI single, followed by an RBI groundout by Willy Yahn (Connecticut). Wiktorski and Martin both touched home on an error by Elmira third baseman Keegan Maronpot (Wake Forest). Will Gorman (RIT) plated the sixth run with a double to center field.

The Pilots tacked on runs in the fourth and seventh innings. Their eighth and final run of the night came after Mark Martin slugged a one-out triple to the gap in right center. He scored in the ensuing at-bat on a Yahn base hit.

Despite walking the bases loaded in the fifth inning, Newark starter Jacob Wloczewski (Binghamton) ended the frame unscathed by fanning Dalton Hoiles (Shippensburg) before inducing a fly out by Brian Barefoot (Louisiana-Monroe) for the final out.

Wloczewski (2-2) earned the win after giving up just one run on four hits and six walks in five innings of work. He lowered his team-leading ERA to 1.97 in his seventh start of the season.

Tristan Widra (Samford) was handed the loss after allowing seven runs (four earned) on seven hits in four innings. Widra (3-2) was forced into action as a last-minute substitution when scheduled starter Nate Matheson (Old Dominion) was scratched from the lineup.

Looking for the improbable comeback, Elmira scored twice in the top of the ninth. Josh Lovelady (Mississippi State) plated Maronpot with an RBI single. Hoiles would earn an easy RBI with a bases-loaded walk two batters later.

Vinny Martin (Iona) was called upon to get the final two outs of the game. He did so by fanning both Barefoot and Jordan Bishop (Siena).

Gorman, Mark Martin and Wiktorski each finished with two hits for Newark. Elmira’s Mike Korchak (Bucknell) not only led his club with two hits in three at-bats, but he also tossed a perfect inning of relief in the sixth.

The Newark Pilots and Elmira Pioneers are back on Thursday, July 22 at 7:05 p.m. to conclude the two-game series at Colburn Park.

Submitted by:  Leslie Ohmann, Newark Pilots

NEWARK, N.Y. – University of San Francisco teammates Blake Valley and Kyle Norman led Newark to a win in Game 1 as the Pilots split a Thursday doubleheader with the Albany Dutchmen at Colburn Park.

The Pilots (14-21) earned a 6-3 victory in the early game as Valley and Norman combined for seven hits, four RBIs and three runs scored batting one-two in the order.

The Dutchmen (17-20) took the nightcap, 4-2, on the arm of Jon Reid (Azusa Pacific).

Game 1

Albany struck for a pair of unearned runs in the opening inning on RBI singles from Sean Aspinall (Azusa Pacific) and Slayton Vaughn (Oral Roberts).

Newark responded with a three-spot in the bottom of the frame. Valley led off with a triple and scored on a Norman base hit. Norman touched home on a Cody Wiktorski (St. John Fisher) double. Mark Martin (Le Moyne) drove in the third run of the inning on an RBI groundout.

Nice two-out hitting by the Pilots allowed them to tack two more runs on in the fourth. Valley singled to put runners on the corners and Norman drove in both runners with a two-run single to right field.

Aspinall plated another Albany run in the fifth on a double to right but Norman got that run back in the bottom of the sixth on an RBI single.

Valley, the leadoff hitter, went a perfect 4-for-4 with two runs scored. Norman, batting second in the lineup, went 3-for-4 with four RBIs and one run scored.

Pilots starting pitcher Charlie Sobieraski (Buffalo) earned the win, hurling six innings and allowing three runs (one earned) on eight hits. The righty fanned six on 96 pitches to improve to 2-1. Vinny Martin (Iona) earned his fifth save with a perfect seventh inning to preserve his 0.00 ERA.

Mike Reitcheck (Pennsylvania) as handed the loss after giving up six runs (five earned) on 14 hits. He struck out four in 5.2 innings of work and evened his record to 3-3.

Game 2

Reid (4-2) tossed his second straight seven-inning complete game and earned his third consecutive win on the mound. He limited the Pilots to two runs on nine hits with four punchouts.

With the game tied 2-2 in the sixth, Adam Gauthier (Dartmouth) drove in the game-winning runs on a triple that landed just fair down the right-field line.

Each team scored once in the first inning. With two outs and runners on the corners, Albany’s Patrick Hisle (Maryland) purposely got himself caught in a rundown, allowing Aspinall to score on a delayed double steal attempt. The Pilots tied the game at 1-1 on a Witorski base hit, plating Valley from third.

Aspinall drove in the go-ahead run with a double in the third, but Valley tied it back up in the fifth on an RBI single from Mark Martin.

In the two games combined, Aspinall finished 5-for-8 with three RBIs and two runs scored for the Dutchmen.

Jacob Wloczewski (Binghamton) surrendered four runs (three earned) on eight hits in 5.1 innings of work as he fell to 1-2 on the season.

The Newark Pilots are back for a 7:05 p.m. game on Friday, July 17 against the Glens Falls Dragons (19-19) with a postgame fireworks show, sponsored by the Ohmann Theatre. The Dutchmen return to Albany to host the Victor Railriders (19-18) at 7:05 p.m.
