SUBMITTED by Jerry Ashley, Lyons Main Street Program Manager (30-Oct-2009)

Last night at the Ohmann Theatre, The Lyons Main Street Program's feature from the 1939 Film Classics was "Mr. Smith Goes to Washington". The movie, which tells the story of Jeff Smith, a naive Boy Ranger leader that is appointed to a Congressional seat in Washington D.C. However, Smith discovers many of the shortcomings of the political process as his earnest goal of a national boys' camp leads to a conflict with the state political boss, Jim Taylor. Taylor first tries to corrupt Smith and then later attempts to destroy Smith through a scandal. It was a perfect way to showcase a "meet and greet" for all those running for an elected office. A sizable crowd came out to shake hands and all of the candidates introduced themselves before the audience. The only village and town candidates missing from last night's meet and greet were John Salone, John Cinelli, Alvin Bailey, Phil Desain and David McIntyre.
