The Public Hearing for the proposed Comprehensive Plan for the town was held on 23 February 2010. Seventy-one people attended; thirty-eight were students. Following the hearing, the Town Board approved several changes including changing the designation of the southwest corner of town from “Residential, Low Priority” area on the Future Land Use Plan map to “Agricultural” and adding as a goal the expansion of broadband internet service throughout the town. There were some other changes in language. The adoption of the Comprehensive Plan will be on the agenda for the 23 March 2010 Town Board meeting.
Congratulations to Cub Scouts Macallister Boldt, Westley Burlee, Jeffrey Cantwell, JD Grell, Jacob Haase, Matthew Kuhl, Ben Madison, Aaryn Schmitt and Will Sponable who I got to see crossover to Boy Scouts at the Cub Scout Pack #521 Blue & Gold Banquet last month.
On 7 March 2010 I attended the Troop 125 Eagle Court of Honor at which Josh Smith was officially recognized as an Eagle Scout. Congratulations Josh!
In February 2009, the Town of Williamson was awarded $80,000 for the replacement of the sidewalk on the north side of Main Street from State Route 21 west to the Municipal Parking Lot. This was the result of a successful grant application submitted jointly by the Williamson Business Improvement District and the Town of Williamson.
Design and engineering fees for the project were $8,400. Competitive bids for construction were advertised three times. On the first occasion only one bid was submitted, on the second no bids were submitted and on the third occasion four bids were submitted. Babcock Enterprises of Dansville, NY, submitted the lowest bid which was for $81,377.70. On 21 December 2009, the Town Board awarded the project to Babcock Enterprises. On 26 January 2010 the Town Board retained Bergmann Associates to oversee the construction phase of this project for $13,500.
The total cost of the sidewalk replacement is $103,277.70, with $23,277.70 needed from town monies to complete the project. However, a request for additional funding was submitted to reduce the cost to the town. This month the Town Board was notified that an additional $10,000 was awarded for the project bringing the total grant funding to $90,000. Therefore, the cost to the town is now reduced to $13,277.70. This is a match of only 13%, lower than most grants of this kind.
Replacement of the sidewalk is scheduled to begin the week of 17 May 2010, the week following the Apple Blossom Festival. It is anticipated taking about six weeks to complete.
On 1 December 2009 the New York Power Authority (NYPA) released a request for proposals for the development of offshore wind power projects in Lake Erie and Lake Ontario. Some of the potential sites, according to NYPA, are off the Wayne County shoreline. In a New York Power Authority’s press release the project is described as a “a utility-scale offshore wind farm between 120 megawatts (mw) and 500 mw total capacity.” The due date for the proposals is 1 June 2010.
The Wayne County Board of Supervisors will be holding a Public Hearing on Wednesday, 31 March 2010 at 7:00 p.m. at the Wayne County Court House, 26 Church Street, Lyons, NY to solicit input on NYPA’s proposed wind turbine project.
I would encourage anyone with an interest in wind power and/or this project to attend the public hearing and share your thoughts with the Board of Supervisors.

Congrats to Josh Smith on becoming an Eagle Scout! This is an accomplishment you'll always carry with you as it continues to fuel your character.
Expanding broadband Internet is a great public service goal for the Williamson Town Board. The benefits to individuals and businesses are great.
