The Lois McClure
Come visit the canal schooner Lois McClure as she comes to shore once again at the Port of Palmyra Marina! The stunning 88 foot canal boat will be in Palmyra, and ready for touring on Thursday September 2, 2010, from 11AM-7PM. Bring your friends, bring your family…this only happens once every few years! The last time she visited she helped us celebrate our first ever, Palmyra Pirate Weekend in 2007. This year the schooner will be visiting us en route to the World Canals Conference in Rochester NY, where she will join a flotilla of working canal vessels and pleasure boats travelling from east and west along the Erie Canal, eventually landing on the Genesee arm of the Erie.

In case you are unfamiliar with the schooner, the Lois McClure is a full-scale replica of an 1862 sailing canal boat. These unique vessels were designed to sail from lake cities to canal ports using wind power and then to lower their masts and sails when traveling along canals.

This year's expedition is made possible by a partnership among the New York State Canal Corporation, Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor, Lake Champlain Maritime Museum, and Champlain Valley National Heritage Partnership, with additional funding support from voyage sponsors, including Cabot Creameries.

You can round out your day by visiting our local, award winning, Historic Palmyra Museums. The four museums (www.historicpalmyrany.com) will be open from 11AM-4PM, where you can get a glimpse of Palmyra’s colorful past and learn how the “Queen of the Erie Canal Towns” got her name.
