By John Addyman

WAYNE COUNTY (Jan 5 11) – University of Buffalo freshman forward Javon McCrea (Newark) got a taste of the collegiate big time last Thursday when 16th-ranked Brigham Young came to town. He got the start in the game, scored 15 points, took down four rebounds and made three assists. He also blocked a shot and made a steal…but the Bulls fell, 90-82, but kept the game close.

Monday night, the Bulls got a win over Cornell, 78-66, and again Javon was a starter, scoring seven points, blocking two shots, grabbing seven rebounds and grabbing two steals. The Bulls are now 8-4 and begin their Mid-America Conference season this weekend when Bowling Green comes to town.

Virginia Tech won its Hokie Holiday Classic last weekend, defeating Alcorn State in the first round Wednesday, 87-44, then getting past Vanderbilt in the championship game Thursday, 74-68. That win over Vandy was the first over a Southeast Conference opponent in six years.
Sophomore starting guard Alyssa Fenyn (Newark) scored seven points against Alcorn, took in two rebounds, and made one assist. She played a bigger role in the Vandy win, capping a couple of second-half fast breaks for the basket that put Tech ahead to stay. Alyssa ended up with 14 points, three rebounds and three steals.
