Local Tourism Leaders are expanding their efforts to garner national media attention for the Finger Lakes Region by hosting Peter Greenberg, Travel Editor for CBS News for a taping of his nationally syndicated radio show, Peter Greenberg Worldwide.

Peter Greenberg is America’s most recognized and respected front-line travel journalist. Peter’s show is heard on over 400 stations in the U.S. and Puerto Rico. It is broadcast each week from a different remote location around the world. On June 22nd, Peter will be taping his show from the Finger Lakes. He will be interviewing local people about the flavor of the region at the Sherwood Inn in Skaneateles. Interviewees include a winery owner, a Finger Lakes chef, a Finger Lakes historian and an Erie Canal business owner.

Wayne County, along with 13 other counties in the Finger Lakes has banded together and hired Quinn and Co., a New York City public relations firm to help promote the region as a premiere travel destination. This is the second year that the region has worked with Quinn & Co. In 2010, the PR Program gained over 474 million impressions in top-tier national media outlets. That success earned the Finger Lakes Region 2010 PR Program a Prism Award last week from the Rochester Chapter of PRSA (Public Relations Society of America).

The 2011 PR Program has seen its share of success with placements already appearing in USA Today and MSNBC.com. Additionally, a group of Tourism Leaders from the Finger Lakes will be traveling to New York City the last week in June to meet desk side with several top-tier media journalists and editors.

The 14 counties of the Finger Lakes Region have many on-going collaborative programs that promote the region as a whole. Their ability to work together has gained national attention for the region. With their individual and combined efforts, along with a top NYC PR firm and a local public relations manager, they have been able to collaborate on promotional activities to bring greater national attention and tourism to the Finger Lakes.
Wayne County believes that building the Finger Lakes brand will ultimately help maintain our region as a thriving tourist destination,” explains Christine Worth, Tourism Director. “Collaborations like the regional PR Program help us leverage our local dollars and ultimately help bring more visitors to our community.”
The Finger Lakes edition of Peter Greenberg Worldwide will air on Saturday, June 25. Listeners in Rochester can tune into Peter Greenberg Worldwide from 3-5pm on WYSL 1040AM. Elmira has two stations that broadcast Peter’s show from Noon-3pm, 1230 WENY and 1450 WENI. The show airs in Buffalo on 1230 WECK from 6-9pm.
