The Lyons Main Street Program has scheduled two volunteer days to make our historic Canal Village sparkle for our seasonal visitors and guests. To make our downtown even more inviting to our visitors, we will gather at the Erie Canal Waterfront between the Leach Road Iron Canal Bridge and the SR 14/Geneva Street Bridge at 9 am, Saturday, April 21 for a three hour waterfront clean-up. Volunteers will weed the Lyons Volunteer Perennial Beds, groom the banks on both sides of the Canal and pick up refuse. The LMSP asks all volunteers to remember their gloves, rakes, shovels, line trimmers, and gardening tools. Volunteers will meet at the boat landing below the Lyons Fire Department at 9 am and break up into work teams, each with a specific task.
For the second year, May has officially been proclaimed "Clean Up, Fix Up and Paint Up Month" by both the Village and Town Boards and in recognition of the proclamation, the second volunteer date of Saturday, May 5th (9 am - 1 pm) will concentrate on sprucing up the historic downtown business district by washing windows, sweeping sidewalks, picking up refuse, and grooming the Village Square Park. Downtown Merchants are asked to assist the volunteer effort with supplies of paper towels, garbage bags, step ladders, brooms, window cleaners as well as snacks and treats to keep the volunteers energized. Both of these volunteer dates are a great way for Lyons' schools, as well as civic and religious organizations, to get involved with the revitalization and beautification of our community. Let's see how many different groups we can pull together this year!
Again this May, Lyonites are encouraged to honor local businesses and residents that show "Pride of Ownership" with a hand delivered and personalized "Thumbs Up!" certificate and congratulatory letter signed by both the Village Mayor and Town Supervisor. Last year, over 35 certificates were delivered by the Lyons Man Street Program to various businesses and home-owners that were singled out by friends and neighbors as exemplary for their efforts to keep Lyons looking great year-round. Any Lyons business or resident may be nominated throughout the month of May by another Lyonite for their tidiness, recently completed improvement project, or continuing efforts to keep Lyons looking her best. To nominate a deserving neighbor, contact Jerry Ashley, LMSP Program Manager at 315-871-4220 or lyonsmainstreetprogram@gmail.com with the name of the resident/business along with their address. A complete listing of all recipients will be published the first week of June. These events are a continuation of the LMSP "Get Lyons Pride" promotions.
