WATERFORD, NY- Cyclists can now see more of the Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor using new bicycle tour routes that connect with the cross-state Erie Canalway Trail. The on-road routes, ranging from easy to challenging, take riders through scenic countryside in Orleans, Ontario, Wayne, and Madison counties.

“We’ve got world class cycling along the 365-mile Erie Canalway Trail and these routes give cyclists additional options for day trips exploring beyond the canal route,” said Bob Radliff, Executive Director of the Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor. “We hope the new routes give cyclists even more reason to stay longer and ride farther.”

According to the U.S. Travel Association, bicycling is now the third most common vacation activity in the country, with more than 27 million Americans who have taken a bicycling vacation in the past five years.

Route maps were developed thanks to a grant from the Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor to the New York Bicycling Coalition (NYBC). NYBC worked with county tourism agencies to produce maps and cue sheets, which are available to cyclists from each county’s tourism agency.

Along each route, cyclists can stop to explore a variety of local attractions, including: canal villages, farm stands, wineries, museums, and state parks. Each brochure is designed to fit into a handlebar bag or map case.

To obtain the new maps, visit each county tourism agency’s website, contact the tourism agency to request a copy, or download them from Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor’s cycling page:

The Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor spans 524 miles across the full expanse of upstate New York, encompassing the Erie, Cayuga-Seneca, Oswego, and Champlain canals and their historic alignments, as well as more than 230 canal communities. www.eriecanalway.org
