You and your family and friends are invited to Walworth Historical Society’s fall open house on October 5th from 2:00 pm until 4:00 pm at 2257 Academy Street, Walworth.  

The Golden Eagle String Band will be performing a program, called “The Civil War Comes to Western New York,” that will feature Civil War music and history.  

The program is FREE for anyone who wishes to attend.   As usual, there will be refreshments and displays inside and outside the museum.  Donations are always appreciated.  PLEASE bring a friend and join us for the afternoon.

Pulitzer Prize-Winning Author Blake Bailey to Visit Newark Public Library

On Saturday, September 13, 2014, Blake Bailey, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of Cheever: A Life, Farther & Wilder, The Splendid Things We Planned and more, will visit the Newark Public Library to talk about his biography of famous Newark author Charles Jackson.

Jackson spent his childhood in Newark and graduated from Newark’s Washington School in 1921 before moving to Chicago in 1923. He published The Lost Weekend, a realistic novel portraying the effects of alcoholism which was made into an Academy Award-winning movie, in 1944. Many of Jackson’s works were based on his own life. He wrote The Sunnier Side: Twelve Arcadian Tales, which was a collection of short stories based on his experiences and acquaintances in Newark. Jackson was made instantly famous by his novel The Lost Weekend, and his life story includes struggles with alcoholism, tuberculosis, and homosexuality. Blake Bailey will be here to speak about his biography of Charles Jackson, a truly notable past resident of Newark with a fascinating story.

Join us on for a special program, "One-Room Rural Schools of Arcadia" presented by Cynthia Russell.


Cynthia is an N-AHS Board Member and a former teacher and administrator in the Newark Schools.

Bring your photos, memories, and stories! Photos and some information of all 19 one-room schoolhouses will be shown.

A special exhibit on Arcadia Rural Schools can be seen at the Marbletown Schoolhouse, open Saturdays throughout September.

The program will be held at the Newark-Arcadia Museum, 120 High St., Newark

The Downtown Newark exhibit at the Newark-Arcadia Museum ends on Saturday, May 3rd. Only two Saturdays left!

The Newark Post Office exhibit also closes, together with the Artwork of Oscar F. Anderson, artist and commercial artist with Bloomer Bros.
