Playwrights / Playreadings 2012 Auditions

SUBMITTED by Mariah Ernhout-Fegley (9-Mar-2012)

Geneva Theatre Guild to Hold Auditions for Playwrights / Playreadings; also Seeks Directors

The Geneva Theatre Guild is holding open auditions to cast a number of short plays for this year’s Playwrights / Playreadings. There are multiple male and female roles ranging in age from teenager to senior citizen. All experience levels welcome and no memorization required. GTG is also seeking directors for two of the plays. This is a great opportunity for first time actors and directors to learn the craft in a low stress production.

Auditions will be held at the Presbyterian Church on Park Place in Geneva from 7:00 to 9:00 PM on March 20 and 21. Enter from the parking lot in the rear of the building and follow the signs to the audition rooms on the second floor.

The plays will be presented as readings in front of live audiences on April 20, 21 and 22. For more information contact Hugh at 315-573-7345 or visit Geneva Theatre Guild’s website at gtglive.org.

Oklahoma! Musical at Wayne Central

SUBMITTED by Marian Wulfert (16-Nov-2011)

The Neighborhood Acting Company (NAC) is pleased to present "Oklahoma!" on Friday, November 18th, and Saturday, November 19th at 7 PM and Sunday, November 20th at 2 PM at the Wayne Central Performing Arts Center, Route 350, Ontario Center, NY. Rodgers & Hammerstein's first collaboration remains, in many ways, their most innovative, having set the standards and established the rules of musical theatre still being followed today. Set in a Western Indian territory just after the turn of the century, the high-spirited rivalry between the local farmers and cowboys provides the colorful background against which Curly, a handsome cowboy, and Laurey, a winsome farm girl, play out their love story. Although the road to true love never runs smooth, with these two headstrong romantics holding the reins, love's journey is as bumpy as a surrey ride down a country road. That they will succeed in making a new life together we have no doubt, and that this new life will begin in a brand-new state provides the ultimate climax to the triumphant rendition of "OKLAHOMA!"

Geneva Theatre Guild presents “All the Great Books (abridged)”

SUBMITTED by Mariah Ernhout-Fegley (20-Oct-2011)

Geneva Theatre Guild’s fall comedy, “All the Great Books (abridged),” is a play that condenses 86 classics of world literature into 90 riotous, laugh-filled minutes. The three cast members use every weapon in their comedic arsenal to prepare their students (the audience) to pass the final exam in Western Literature. Slapstick, cross-dressing and goofy jokes abound in this play written by Reed Martin and Austin Tichenor of the Reduced Shakespeare Company. Craig Deseiring of Phelps portrays Coach, Steve Mitchell of Geneva plays The Professor, and Geneva native RJ Rapoza rounds out the cast as The Student Teacher.
“Every time the guys perform a scene from the play, they find a new way to make me laugh,” said director Patrick Fegley. “Their energy and enthusiasm combined with a hilarious script really brings to life the classics in a way that most audiences have likely never experienced.”
“All the Great Books (abridged)” will be performed November 4-6 and 11-13 at the Pat Collins Black Box Theater at the Geneva Community Center on Carter Road. Friday and Saturday performances are at 8 PM, Sunday performances are at 2 PM. Tickets are $12 for adults and $10 for students/seniors, and are available for purchase at Area Records and The UPS Store in Geneva, online at www.gtglive.org, as well as at the door.

Civil War Plays at the Ohmann Theatre

SUBMITTED by Larry Ann Evans (2-Sep-2011)

Historical Societies to Present Two Civil War Plays

The Museum of Wayne County History in conjunction with the Lyons Heritage Society will be presenting Two Civil War plays, “Solemn Pride” and “Ever True” at the Ohmann Theatre in Lyons Sept. 24 & 25.

Both plays will be directed by Larry Ann Evans and have a local connection. “Solemn Pride” was written by Lyons resident George R. Leighton in 1918 and is a one act play centering on the lives of 9 women on April 10, 1865 when news of the end of the Civil War reaches them. It culminates with historical letter, addressed to Mrs. Bixby from President Lincoln. “Ever True”, written by Lisa Saunders, is the true story of an Alton couple’s devotion to their country and each other in the midst of war’s infidelities, scandals and ever-present threat of death. The story is told through the couple’s letters to each other, Private Charles McDowell and Nancy McDowell, the great grand parents of Lisa Saunders.

The “Solemn Pride” cast is played by Jessica Edgington, Pat Gorthy, Donna Schuldt, Alexis, Brenda & Aria Smith, all of Lyons and Sherryle Godkin-Hoven and Pat Fisher of Clyde and Denise Parks of Geneva.
“The ladies will have to practice sitting and maneuvering with the hoop skirts, especially since you can’t see your feet when you walk!” said Sherryle Godkin-Hoven, President of the Galen Historical Society who is not only performing in the production but also helping out with the period costumes.
The “Ever True” cast is played by Brennan Bastedo of Clyde, Kelsy Raymond of Savannah and Eleanor Stearns of Geneva.
“Both Brennan and Kelsy are very talented high school students, who even though are definitely from the 21st century, seem to possess an old fashion quality which lends credibility to their performance of these two people from 1860’s,” said Evans.
Both plays will be performed at the Ohmann Theatre on Sept. 24 at 7pm and Sept. 25 @ 2pm. There will also be a reception and discussion in “Foxes” after the play to meet and greet the actors and discuss the plays and the civil war.

Emma Carpenter as Lily St. Regis
SUBMITTED by Linda Guest (24-Jun-2011)

Annie is in it's final weeks of rehearsals and it's coming together brilliantly says director Suzi Castellano. Annie is a wonderful musical that everyone in the family is truly going to love. This is an opportunity for your family to see a hit Broadway musical and legendary film close to home. As Lyons kicks off their Peppermint Days weekend, Clyde Community Players will go on stage at the Ohmanns' Theatre in Lyons, NY.

The Ohmann Theatre was built in 1915 by Burt Ohmann. He operated the theatre well into the 1930's. His sons Myron and Robert managed the theatre for the next 20 years. In 2005 Robert's oldest son Bob brought the theatre back to the Ohmann family. With a complete reconstruction to the theatre it now proudly shows movies on Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings with matinee's on Saturday and Sundays. Amazingly, original seats from the 1914 theatre were saved and now the balcony holds a precious part of the Ohmann Theatre's history. The Ohmann Theatre is managed by Tom Herendeen.

As the cast of Annie gets ready to take the stage for the 21st annual Peppermint Days festival, we talked with “Rooster, his Lily and his sister Ms. Hannigan. Rooster, played by Brennan Bastedo of Clyde attends 10th grade at the Clyde High School. Brennan enjoys playing his guitar and fishing when he is not at “Annie” rehearsals. Brennan says he was drawn to “Annie” because of his love for acting and singing. Someday, he hopes to go to college for musical theatre and eventually move on to Broadway. For now, Brennan say's “It's an honor to be performing in the oldest theatre and movie house in America and I'm very grateful that Lyons is letting us kick off Peppermint Days.”
