SUBMITTED by Marjorie Torelli (21-Dec-2011)

The Western Finger Lakes Solid Waste Management Authority Board (WFLA) held its regularly scheduled meeting on Monday, December 19 at the WFLA offices, 9 Pearl Street, Lyons, 2nd floor.

The Board adopted the meeting schedule for 2012: January 23, March 19, April 16, August 20, September 17, October 15 and December 17. Additional meetings may be scheduled if needed. All meetings will be held at the WFLA offices, 9 Pearl Street, Lyons, 2nd floor, beginning at 5 p.m. The public is always welcome.

The future operations of the Materials Recovery Facility (MRF), the recycling building located at the Town of Arcadia landfill on Rt. 88, Newark, was the subject of a long discussion. Following the start of the $40 per ton tipping fee at the MRF for curbside recycling from trash haulers, all the private waste haulers in Wayne County stopped bringing their materials to the MRF. Recycling Coordinator Bill Woods and Administrator Marjorie Torelli proposed that the flow of recycling materials from outside Wayne County would allow the continued operation of the MRF. However, at present, brokers and other municipalities are not shipping materials to the MRF. There is enough material on site to operate for only a few more weeks. By resolution, the Board directed Mr. Woods to operate the MRF as long as there are materials to process. When all the current materials are sorted and shipped, the Authority staff will prepare the facility for shut-down. No temporary workers will be employed after the current inventory of material is exhausted.

Because of the projected close of the WFLA recycling operations, Ms. Torelli was directed to seek an outside company to lease or buy the facility.

In other actions, the WFLA Board
  • adopted a six-month budget for 2012 including operations for the MRF and administrative functions for the office staff;
  • changed Marjorie Torelli’s title from Interim Administrator to Administrator and William Woods’ title from Interim Recycling Coordinator to Recycling Coordinator.
The next meeting of the WFLA Board will be held Monday, January 23, 2012, 5 p.m. at the WFLA offices, 9 Pearl Street, Lyons, 2nd floor. The public is always welcome. Another Wayne County failure. Let the private companies in and get it done

  2. Anonymous Said,

    Getting out of the recycling business was a recommendation of the Wayne County Fiscal Advisory Team five years ago. It is good that it is finally being terminated and left to the people who are in this business. Even though there were claims of disastrous results if the County did not continue this operation, it obviously is working well with private haulers. The next thing the Supervisors should do is get out of the Western Fingerlakes Authority.
