Conversation with the Mayor
Once a teacher, always a teacher – there is much truth to that adage and its truth comes out in funny ways. Most, not all, but most, of the teachers I worked with were just as appreciative of snow days as the students. It was found time, an unexpected bit of serendipity. Of course, it meant rearranging schedules, but living where we do, experienced teachers were able to do that and had lots of opportunities to do so. Weather has and continues to have a huge impact on almost every aspect of our lives and not just in a negative way.
My thought as I left for the Village Hall this morning was, let’s call a ‘sun day’. We have snow days, why not sun days? Why waste such a glorious summer (officially) day inside offices and shops and schools? Do you remember trying to sweet talk your teachers to move the class outside on a beautiful spring day? It seldom worked but the question had to be asked.

Bidding farewell to retiring Administrator Sharon Lilla was the first item of business for the Western Finger Lakes Authority Board at its regular monthly meeting, Monday, June 27. Chair Suzanne Earl (Newark) expressed her appreciation for Lilla’s many years of contributions to the Authority from the time it was first considered in the late 1980s to the present. In return Lilla said that she had been incredibly lucky to enjoy a fulfilling career, that her accomplishments were the work of many, and that her efforts were always on behalf of the taxpayers. Finally she thanked the WFLA Board members for their support and assistance over the many years. The Board passed a resolution appointing Marjorie Torelli as Interim Administrator, effective July 11, 2011.

The Lyons Main Street Program is proud to announce the winners of this years "Paint the village Peppermint" contest - in the residential category, the Becker residence at 11 Layton Street took top honors and in the business category, Greco Jewelers narrowly defeated the Wayne County Ladies that decorated the display windows of the Park Bakery Building next door to the Wayne County Courthouse.

The Becker residence is awash in a "patriotic peppermint" style with wrapped candies mounted on stakes, peppermint lights as well as American flags and bunting. Greco Jewelers, located at 8 Canal Street, features a display window of peppermint candies and lights, peppermint pots and tulle bunting. Our congratulations to this years' winners of cash awards.

In addition to the above winners, judges encouraged others to take the time to drive by the following address to see other outstanding examples of Peppermint Pride: Grace Episcopal Church at Phelps and Lawrence Streets, the Shaffer residence, 26 Culver Street; the Pullen Residence, 69 Cherry Street; the James residence, 8 Maple Street; and the Steitler residence, 207 Water Street.
Thanks to all of you that participated and we look forward to seeing more of your creativity next year! Our thanks to the judges: Maggie Simmons, Lisa Franklin, Kim Kelley and Scott Bailey.
Peppermint Days runs from the July 7th Red Carpet Premiere of Annie at the Ohmann Theatre to the classic car show Sunday, July 10th.
