Lyons Main Street Program Appoints New Director

Submitted by:  Lyons Main Street Program

Joan Delaro, newly appointed
Director, Lyons Main
Street Program
The Board of Directors of the Lyons Main Street Program is pleased to announce that Joan Delaro has been appointed as Director of the Lyons Main Street Program.  Joan comes to the Lyons Main Street Program with many years of experience working with the Western Erie Canal Alliance and the Western Erie Canal Main Street Program.  Paula Bartishevich, President of the Lyons Main Street Program Board of Directors, said “the board is excited to have Joan join the Lyons Main Street Program.  Her experience and knowledge will move the program to the next phase of revitalization for Lyons.”

The Lyons Main Street Program began in 2008.  Lyons is one (1) of only three (3) communities in the Western Erie Canal Heritage Corridor that is designated by the Western Erie Canal Alliance as a National Trust Main Street. Lyons embraces the National Trust Main Street Center
Four Point Approach of Organization: building grassroots support and partnerships between public and private community entities and commercial district stakeholders, Promotion: creating a positive image that will rekindle community pride and improve consumer and investor confidence in commercial district, Economic Restructuring: strengthening community’s existing economic assets while diversifying its economic base that will create an entrepreneurial atmosphere and desire to invest in community, Design: Maintaining historic integrity and preservation as it applies to inherent success in a commercial district.

The Main Street program is designed as a program dependent on volunteers willing to work on projects, events and activities. Financial support is derived from personal, business and local government to better their Main Street area and their community as a whole.

Joan will be working on a part time basis out of 70 William Street, Lyons, NY.  The office will be open 10:00AM-3:00PM Monday, Wednesday & Fridays and by appointment or chance.  Although, Joan said, “it is best to call first since I will be out and about meeting with the business owners and community members”. (Office number is: 315-871-4220).  I am looking forward to learning what the Lyons community sees for the future of Lyons and how the Lyons Main Street Program can help reach that goal. “

An active and thriving Main Street enhances a community.  It provides shopping, restaurants and community events.  In the case of Lyons it is also the county seat where county business is conducted.  Rural areas, such as Lyons, have always depended on their Main Street as the core of its community. Anyone interested in volunteering as part of the Lyons Main Street Program should contact Joan Delaro at 315-871-4220 or email www.lyonsmainstreetprogram.com.

The Lyons Main Street Program is supported by: WCIDA and the Wayne County Business Builders, the NYS Department of State with funds provided under Title 11 of the Environmental Protection Fund and Western Erie Canal Main Street Program.

Lyons Lights It Up!

Submitted by: Jerry Ashley, Lyons Main Street Program

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas as the Lyons Main Street Program firms up plans for Peppermint Winter Wonderland. This year, the Lyons Main Street Program has partnered with Lyons National Bank (LNB), Dobbins Drugs, the Ohmann Theatre and the Lyons Chamber of Commerce in celebration of the national Small Business Saturday promotion on Saturday, November 24th to brighten up downtown Lyons for the holidays.

Downtown businesses will be open late for shopping, offer light snacks to their shoppers and Lyons will once again trip the lights fantastic when the fourth edition of Peppermint Winter Wonderland’s “Light Up Lyons Holiday Lights Parade” makes its way through downtown. The parade began four years ago as a LMSP holiday promotion to draw visitors and shoppers to downtown businesses and last year it joined forces with the “Light Up the Park” volunteers to grow both events.

To help set the stage for festive holiday activities, the Lyons Main Street Program and Lyons Chamber of Commerce are urging downtown businesses and residents along the parade route to deck the halls with lots of lights and decorations.

The Holiday Lights Parade, which steps-off at 6 pm, will line up at the Town of Lyons office parking lot at Jackson and Phelps/14 beginning at 5: 30 pm. There are no registrations and entrants need only to arrive at 5:30 pm to be placed in the line-up. Entrants are encouraged to cover anything that moves with lights (which makes the possibilities unlimited!) and join the fun.
Dashboard converters are available for less than $25 and will power portable sound systems or multiple strings of LED lights while increased power converters will power LED lights and inflatable holiday decorations.

The parade route will be south on William Street from Broad Street to Pearl Street; West on Pearl Street to Broad Street; north on Broad Street to Church Street to disperse. While the crowd awaits Santa’s arrival, background holiday music will set the tone and there will be a vendor on hand selling treats and warm beverages.

After Santa’s arrival at the Wayne County Courthouse, Santa will lead the audience in the countdown to the lighting of the park, including lighted decorations on the newly restored bandstand. The Lyons High School Jazz Ensemble and the Lyons Varsity Cheerleaders will perform before Santa leads the crowds to Fox’s at the Ohmann Theatre where he will sit for photographs (bring your own camera!).

As a lead up to the parade and lighting ceremonies, LNB and the Ohmann Theatre are sponsoring a free kiddy movie, Alvin and the Chipmunks at 1 pm. The Newark Pilots mascot, Ace, will be on-hand to greet the kids.

Other Ohmann Theatre events for the month of December include a celebration of the theatre’s 98th birthday with a digitally remastered presentation of Gone With the Wind at 7:30 pm on Dec. 6 and 7, and at 3 pm and 7:30 pm on Dec. 8 and 9. On Friday, December 21st, LNB will partner with the theatre again and present free showings of Arthur Christmas at 1 pm and a very special presentation of White Christmas at 7:30.

Made in 1954, White Christmas, starring Bing Crosby, Danny Kaye, Rosemary Clooney and Vera Ellen, is second only to A Christmas Story as a favorite holiday classic and was filmed for the big screen in VistaVision and Technicolor. Only the big screen can provide the venue in which the movie was meant to be shown with all of the big song and dance numbers, colorful costuming, not to mention the big payoff at the end of the movie when the barn doors open to reveal a scene direct from a Currier and Ives print while the cast sings the title song. The free showings on December 21st are presented in conjunction with the Lyons Main Street Program’s “Festive Friday – A Last Minute Shopping Blast” a promotion aimed at last minute shoppers seeking something other than a “big box store” gift. Downtown retail businesses will be open late and offer samples and light snacks to keep shoppers spirits up.

For more information, please contact the Lyons Main Street Program and the Lyons Chamber of Commerce at (315) 871-4220.

Rat Rodz at PumpkinPalooza!

Submitted by; Jerry Ashley, Lyons Main Street Program

According to Wikipedia, a "rat rod" is "a style of hot rod or custom car that, in most cases, imitates (or exaggerates) the early hot rods of the 40s, 50s, and 60s". Hot Rod Concepts further states that Rat Rodz "are those that are pieced together to look like old time jalopies, although some times they require more work than a show rod". Most always, it is a hot rod with its body left rusty, and sometimes built with a very rough chassis or mismatched parts.

Some rod owners like the term, while others think it's derogatory. Whatever your thoughts are, the PumpkinPalooza! Committee of the Lyons Main Street Program has announced the first PumpkinPalooza! Rat Rodz Show to coincide with the harvest festival now celebrating it's fourth year.

The combination of a Rat Rodz Show and PumpkinPalooza! is a natural as the festival celebrates all things "pumpkin funky" while providing a venue for local organizations and businesses in the "local first" harvest celebration. As if Casket Races, Vehicle "Transformers", and the Great Pearl Street Pumpkin Race weren't enough, the committee felt that the rods would make a slightly ghoulish, vintage addition to the day of fun.

All Rat Rodz will be featured in the PumpkinPalooza! Costume Parade and will be on display throughout the festival to garner votes for the best of show trophy.

This years' PumpkinPalooza! is scheduled for Saturday, October 20th with a rain date of Saturday, October 27th. The entry fee is $10 per car and benefits the Lyons Main Street Program's ongoing efforts to revitalize the downtown Lyons business district. For an application, please contact lyonsmainstreetprogram@gmail.com or call 315-871-4220.

PumpkinPalooza! Plans a-plenty!

The PumpkinPalooza! Committee of the Lyons Main Street Program is pumping up plans for another send up of the grand orange globe. This years' PumpkinPalooza! will be held on Saturday, October 20th with a
rain date of Saturday, October 27th. The popular fall festival has grown with each outing and the 4th annual event will be no exception.

Back for a return engagement are crowd favorites such as the PumpkinPalooza! Casket Races, Pumpkin Carving contest, Free Kids Games, Pumpkin Pie Eating contest, music, Costume Parade, and the signature event of the day, the Lyons Youth Ambassadors' Great Pearl Street Pumpkin Race.

Vendor booth applications may be requested by contacting the LMSP at lyonsmainstreetprogram@gmail.com and the booth fee for the 2012 event will be $20.

Also returning this year are "Transformers", a vehicle transformation contest where entrants take any vehicle on wheels and make it into something it isn't (think buggy eyes, fangs, or something out of a futuristic sci-fi movie). New this year is the addition of the PumpkinPalooza! Antique Show and Sale which will be held alongside harvest foods and games for the kids.

The next PumpkinPalooza! Committee meeting will be held on August 22nd at 6 pm at 37 Bear Street, Lyons. The committee invites any and all residents that would like to be a part of this fun event to attend the meeting and to bring along fresh ideas and their enthusiasm.

For additional information please contact the LMSP at the email address above or at 315-871-4209.

Peppermint Pennies and Bandstand Bucks counts the change to pretty-up Lyons!

Submitted by: Jerry Ashley, Lyons Main Street Program

The Lyons Main Street Program's 2011-2012 Peppermint Pennies and Bandstand Bucks promotion collected funds to assist in "prettying up" Lyons parks and downtown Erie Canal Waterfront.

Over-sized glass jars were strategically placed in high volume traffic locations such as LNB and Dobbins Drugs to encourage shoppers to donate their change and folding money to purchase plants and materials for Lyons' parks.

The LMSP Board of Directors presented checks to the Village of Lyons Mayor, Corrine Kleisle, and to Mark DeCracker, representing Trail Works, Inc. and the Lyons "Trail of Hope", for plant materials and supplies for Taylor Park, the Erie Canal Waterfront, the Village Square Park and Bandstand, and the "Trail of Hope".

The year-long promotion collected almost $650 and plans are in the works to put the jars out again for the 2012-2013 season within the next 30 days. Locate your penny jar and donate its contents to a fantastic cause - Lyons' parks!

"Thumbs Up" Winners Announced

Submitted by:  Jerry Ashley, Lyons Main Street Program Manage

For the second year, the "Thumbs Up!" awards have proven to be a winner in Lyons! The Lyons Main Street Program reported that there were more nominations this year than last and the residents of Lyons are finding this a fun way to acknowledge the efforts of residents and local businesses alike to keep Lyons looking neat and polished. Nominations for the Thumbs Up certificate are made only by a Lyons resident throughout the month of May each year as a part of the "Get Lyons Pride" promotion by the Lyons Main Street Program.

Each year the LMSP petitions both the Village and Town boards to proclaim the month of May "Clean Up, Fix Up and Paint Up Month" and official proclamations are issued and signed by Village of Lyons Mayor Corrine Kleisle and Town of Lyons Supervisor Brian Manktelow. Both Kleisle and Manktelow sign the "Thumbs Up!" certificates which are printed on parchment paper and hand delivered by the LMSP to the worthy recipients. In most cases, the recipients frame them and place them on display while others have posted theirs on facebook.

Jerry Ashley, Program Manager of the LMSP said "We won't divulge the name of the Lyons resident that nominates a fellow resident or business, that makes it more fun. No one knows who has nominated them." Usually, the recipient will nominate someone else that they feel is deserving. "We have had many calls and have had several of the winners stop by the office to say thanks for the certificate. They are happy that someone noticed their hard work. It's giving the residents of Lyons a way to say "job well done" to those that have recently painted their house, put in a new garden or flower bed, have made a significant improvement to their property or simply keep their property looking great year-round.", Ashley said.

The LMSP is proud to announce this years' recipients of the 2012 "Thumbs Up!" awards:

Due to rain, the Lyons Main Street Program was forced to cancel last Saturday's Canal Waterfront Clean-up. The new date for the waterfront clean-up will coincide with the Saturday, May 5th Downtown Spruce Up Day, 9 am - 1 pm.

The LMSP is asking all organizations (Rotary, Elks, Humanity Lodge, VFW, American Legion, Churches, Heritage and Historical Societies as well as the Lyons Schools) to encourage their members to come out in support of the month of May as "Clean Up, Fix Up and Paint Up Month" by assisting the LMSP volunteers.

Volunteers will be needed in downtown, the canal waterfont, Hotchkiss Building/Dobbins Park and Taylor Park (there is an immediate need for an organization to take on removal of graffiti on the gazebo at Taylor Park).

Valentine's Day is synonymous with Red and White!

2010 Red & White Couple of the Year
Jennifer Dunn & Robert Goatseay
Submitted by:  Jerry Ashley, Lyons Main Street Program Manager

The 2012 Red and White Affair has been set for Saturday evening, February 11th at Studebaker’s Grille, 8 Clyde Road, Lyons. The Lyons Main Street Program’s Valentine’s dinner-dance fund-raiser will begin at 6 pm with cocktails and a buffet dinner will be served at 7:15 pm. The Red and White Affair committee, Joanne Greco, Terri Burnham and Jennifer Dunn, have brought in new ideas as well as a youthful twist to this year’s event. New for this year is the addition of “just a touch of Mardi Gras”. Guests are encouraged to accessorize their red and white attire with Mardi Gras style masks and/or wear Mardi Gras style costumes that carry out the red and white theme of the evening. Masks may be worn or mounted on sticks to carry as an accessory – think glitter, feathers, jewels, and sequins! Again this year, there is a contest for the Best Red and White Couple. Last year’s winners were Jennifer Dunn and Robert Goatseay for their angelic white and devilishly red costumes.

The Annual Red and White Affair began in 2010 as a fund-raiser for the Lyons Main Street Program to provide a local evening out to celebrate Valentine’s Day with good food and dancing. In years past, there have been a silent auction, a live auction, door prizes, and a 50/50 drawing and those same activities will be a part of the evening’s program this year. Dancing music that crosses all generations will be provided by Jim Fremouw of Good Time DJ and Karaoke Entertainment and requests will be taken throughout the evening. Good Time’s Karaoke capabilities allows for the possibility to serenade your special sweetheart or to entertain (or not!) the crowd with your personal rendition of a favorite song! Tickets, $40 per person or $75 per couple, include a free cocktail and 50/50 ticket for each guest. Tickets are available through the Red and White Affair committee members, or at Greco Jewelers, the Lyons Main Street Program office, Dobbin’s Drugs and LNB Main Office, downtown Lyons. Don’t miss the chance to dine and dance the night away with friends and neighbors while supporting the continued efforts of the Lyons Main Street Program. For further information, please contact the LMSP at 315-871-4220.

Lyons Main Street Program Seeks Community Input

Submitted by:  Jerry Ashley, Lyons Main Street Program Manager

Having reached the objectives set forth by the founding Board of Directors of the Lyons Main Street Program, and as the program enters its fourth year of operation, a new generation of Board and Committee members are being sought to assist in defining the future direction of the downtown revitalization organization. Incorporated as a NYS Non-Profit Organization and operating under the model provided by the National Trust for Historic Preservation's National Main Street Program, the LMSP concentrated on altering regional, as well as local, perception and focused on marketable positives over the past three years. The Directors worked to revive community pride and sense of ownership through cleanup and beautification projects as well as sponsoring shop local events, promotions, and Lyons Only festivals. The program has offered assistance to new businesses and to those individuals exploring the possibilities of starting a business in downtown Lyons. Fourteen businesses have opened in downtown Lyons since January 2009, ten in the past year of which seven have opened on Canal Street alone. As a reinvigoration organization, the LMSP has just begun to scratch the surface of revitalization possibilities that can keep our momentum moving forward. Much has been accomplished however, there is more to be done.

The Nominating Committee of the LMSP, Dr. Randolph Mitchell, Keith Bridger, and Sharon Lubitow, is inviting all Lyons residents and business owners to a 30-minute informational presentation at 7 pm on Thursday, February 16, at the Lyons Public Library Community Room. The group will offer a five minute DVD "introduction" to the Lyons Main Street Program and the rest of the time will be dedicated to a question and answer session with the goal of keeping the gathering to thirty minutes. The presentation is being offered to both inform and entice interested individuals that may find a place on the Board of Directors or one of the LMSP committees for their talents and experience while furthering Lyons' business and tourism future. Refreshments will be offered following the presentation for those that would like to engage in further discussion. For further information, please contact Sharon Lubitow at 315-398-8974.

Light Up Lyons Holiday Lights Parade and Light Up the Park!!

Submitted by:  Jerry Ashley, Lyons Main Street Program

"It's the most wonderful time of the year" as the holiday song goes and that time of year is quickly approaching. Back for its third outing, the "Light Up Lyons Holiday Lights Parade" joins forces this year with Peppermint Winter Wonderland's "Light Up the Park" to provide an evening of fun and holiday merriment on Saturday, November 26th. The parade encourages residents, organizations and businesses to come up with a vehicle to cover with lights - heck, anything that moves is fair game! Dress up the family mutt, cover the kiddies' wagon or battery operated vehicle with lights, build a silly miniature float or gather up a group of merry-makers to prance along doing the antler dance or sing your way down the route. Cover the family van or your bicycle with lights. Fire up the ATV and hook up an I-pod and speakers to blast your favorite carol for all of Lyons to hear. Converters are available online for $25 or less that will convert a port in late model cars and trucks into a 110 volt outlet for holiday lights so here is your chance to kick the holidays into high gear with bright lights and fanfare!

New for this year, Santa will arrive at the park on as the Honorary Grand Marshall on the last fire truck in the parade accompanied by the Lyons Varisty Cheerleaders. The Lyons HS Vocal Jazz Ensemble will be on hand to sing some holiday carols and the Cheerleaders will assist Santa with the countdown to the lighting of the park. Afterward Santa will sit for pictures with the kids at Newberry's on William Street (sorry guys, no word yet about having your picture taken with the cheerleaders). Peppermint Winter Wonderland will also be celebrating the shop local national promotion "Small Business Saturday". Small Business Saturday is the antithesis of Black Friday where shoppers are encouraged to shop local small businesses or those commonly referred to as "mom and pops". To further encourage locals to shop downtown Lyons on November 26th, Mayor Corrine Kleisle has signed a proclamation proclaiming that date as Lyons Small Business Saturday. You can learn more about Small Business Saturday by visiting www.smallbusinesssaturday.com. Several of our downtown Lyons businesses will be taking advantage of the promotion including Dobbin's Drugs and Gift Shop and Old Lyons Hardware. Both will offer an open house and will remain open until 7:30 pm. Stop by and sample available dip and soup mixes while browsing two of Lyons' best kept secrets.

The Beaudette Family gets into the Holiday swing
in the Light Up Lyons Holiday Lights Parade.
This year the Lyons Girl Scouts will be offering Hot Cocoa and treats for sale at Newberry's while parents and kids visit with Santa Claus to help fund their trip to Washington DC for the 100th Anniversary Celebration of the Girl Scouts. Everything around us may be saying the economy isn't cooperating but remember the Grinch's revelation after he tried to steal Christmas from the Whos of Whoville - "...he thought of something he hadn’t before. What if Christmas, he thought, doesn’t come from a store. What if Christmas, perhaps, means a little bit more?"

There was something more than a chill in the air on Saturday, October 22nd in downtown Lyons - you could feel the excitement! Lyons has it, there is no doubt. The Lyons Main Street Program's third anniversary PumpkinPalooza! was an even bigger crowd-drawing success this year and the success of the festival is due to the participation of many Lyons businesses and organizations as well as the volunteers that came out to welcome and entertain our guests. Get Pumped Up for Pumpkinpalooza!

Submitted by: Jerry Ashley, Lyons Main Street Program Manager

The PumpkinPalooza! Committee of the Lyons Main Street Program has announced that applications are available for participation in the 2011 edition of PumpkinPalooza! On Saturday, October 22nd, the “Lyons Only” festival is making its third outing to celebrate fall harvest with new events aimed at making this a family-friendly, fun-filled day for all ages. An all-purpose application for booths, as well as for all other events and contests, is available at www.lyonsmainstreetprogram.org under the PumpkinPalooza! icon. Check off the appropriate boxes, fill in the requested information, and forward to the Lyons Main Street Program, 70 William Street, Lyons, NY 14489. Information and guidelines for each of the events and contests are also available at the above web address. The cost for booth space this year is $20.00 and booths are open to all Lyons-based businesses (including home-based businesses such as Scentsy, Pampered Chef and Avon as well as services such as plumbers, electricians, etc.), crafters, wood-workers, and all organizations. Vendors will be designated space either at the Village Square Park or along the center of William Street in downtown Lyons. The PumpkinPalooza! Committee is also looking for local dance groups or organizations that would like to present demonstrations during the festival while seeking new members for their groups.
The Great Pearl Street Pumpkin Race

Along with the Scarecrow Contest, Pumpkin Carving Contest, the Fall Into Fun business and residential decorating contest, the Lyons Youth Ambassador’s Great Pearl Street Pumpkin Race, Casket Races, Costume Parade, Flavors of Fall cooking contest, kids games, and every activity that can be done with a pumpkin, the PumpkinPalooza! Committee has announced three new events. The first is the “Canal Pumpkin Race” (think of a rubber duck race with pumpkins!) and the second is the “Biggest and Smallest Pumpkin” contest (open to any Wayne County Farm or grower). Both the “Biggest and Smallest Pumpkin” contest and the “Flavors of Fall” harvest cooking contest will be held at the Village Square Park the week before PumpkinPalooza! on Saturday, October 15th during the Lyons Farmer’s Market. The winning biggest and smallest pumpkins will be displayed throughout PumpkinPalooza! Those wishing to enter the “Flavors of Fall” cooking contest must submit their entries no later than 10 am at the LMSP pavilion.

The third new contest is the “Bug Bug – and other Creepy Crawlers”. “Bug Bug” is a contest for all local and regional Volkswagen Beetle owners of any vintage, as well as for those creative folks that drive other makes and models of cars or trucks, to take their people movers and fashion them into a drivable, creepy-crawly bug. Attach some hairy spider legs, paint on some big scary eyes or maybe fashion some wings and fangs to transform your vehicle. The “Bugs” will be displayed on Canal Street throughout the day and the cash award will be determined by the car that receives the most festival-goer votes. All “Bug Bug” entries are asked to drive their entry in the PumpkinPalooza! Costume Parade along with those from the Casket Race.

The Lyons Elementary School Teachers, under the coordination of Eric Lewis, will organize the games for kids including the Pumpkin Sweep Relay, Pumpkin Bowling, the Squash-Squish Tug-o-War, the Hallow-Scream contest, Corn Husking challenge, Pumpkin-Butt, and the new for this year Pumpkin Stacking and Pumpkin Dive. The LMSP has partnered with the Lyons Enrichment Afterschool Program (LEAP) to present a family pumpkin carving night again this year at the Village Square Park on Thursday, October 20th from 4:30 – 8 pm. In addition to all of the above events, the Lyons Community Center will host the second PumpkinPalooza! 5K Run and a Haunted Trail at the center, and the Lyons Fire Department, Ohmann Theatre, Museum of Wayne County History, and the H.G. Hotchkiss Building will be open for tours with special events of their own to celebrate. This years’ festival is sponsored in part by Lyons National Bank (LNB), Pacello’s Mobil/Laundromat and Car Wash, Manktelow Farms and Stoney’s Pizzeria. Summer Magic Picnic on the Canal!!

Submitted by JERRY ASHLEY, LMSP Manager

In recognition of our many loyal, local volunteers and in celebration of the 6th Anniversary of New York State Canal Corporation's Canal Splash!, residents of Lyons are invited to spend an evening with their families, friends, and neighbors picnicking and watching a classic Walt Disney family movie. Join us for family friendly fun at 7 pm, Friday evening, August 12th, behind the Hotchkiss Building on the Erie Canal for our first "Summer Magic Picnic on the Canal".

Canal Splash! is a coordinated series of locally organized events and activities, including nature and history walks, museum and gallery exhibits, rowing regattas, kayak and canoe outings, musical performances, boat tours and more that celebrate the history, culture, recreational appeal, and beauty of the New York State Canal System and Erie Canalway Trail. Bring a picnic dinner, spread out on the lawn of the Hotchkiss Building and Dobbins Park and watch the movie "Summer Magic" starring Hayley Mills, Dorothy McGuire and Burl Ives.

Our featured movie, Summer Magic (1963), is a story about a Boston widow and her children taking up residence in a small town in Maine and is based on the book "Mother Carey's Chickens" by Kate Douglas Wiggin. Widowed Margaret Carey (Dororthy McGuire) prepares to move her family into a depressing apartment, but her eldest daughter Nancy Carey (Hayley Mills) writes to Osh Popham (Burl Ives), the caretaker of a millionaire's country home they saw while on vacation in Maine. Popham lets the Careys have the house for a pittance and contributes major labor and materials to make it livable, much to the consternation of his wife Mariah (Una Merkel). Nancy is grieved when her snooty cousin Julia (Deborah Walley) shows up, especially when the self-styled debutante steals the attention of the handsome new teacher Charles Bryant (James Stacy). Nancy gets unexpected compensation in the form of the even more desirable Tom Hamilton (Peter Brown), not realizing he is the owner of the house that his factor Popham has basically given away.

Lyons has seen a resurgence of tourism and new businesses due to the efforts of many volunteers and organizations. The "Summer Magic Picnic on the Canal" is the first canal event resulting from the Lyons Joint Erie Canal Committee comprised of volunteers from The Village and Town of Lyons, The Lyons Chamber of Commerce, The Lyons Heritage Society, The Lyons Erie Canal Volunteers headed up by Bob Stopper and Jack McCranels and the Lyons Main Street Program. Volunteers from these and other Lyons organizations will be recognized during a short presentation at the picnic. For additional information, please contact the Lyons Chamber of Commerce (lyonsnychamber@gmail.com) or the Lyons Main Street Program (lyonsmainstreetprogram@gmail.com).

Lyons Main Street Program receives National Trust Main Street Accreditation for 2nd year

Submitted by: JERRY ASHLEY, Lyons Main Street Program

Now halfway through the third year of operations, The Lyons Main Street Program has been designated as an accredited National Main Street Program for the second year in a row by meeting the commercial district revitalization performance standards set by the National Trust Main Street Center. Each year the National Trust and its partners announce the list of accredited programs that have built strong revitalization organizations and demonstrate their ability in using the Main Street Four-Point Approach methodology for strengthening their local economy and protecting their historic buildings.

"We congratulate this year's nationally accredited Main Street programs for meeting established performance standards," says Doug Loescher, director of the National Trust Main Street Center. "Accredited Main Street programs are meeting the challenges of the recession head-on and are successfully using focused, comprehensive revitalization strategy to keep their communities vibrant."

The organizations' performance is annually evaluated by the Western Erie Canal Main Street Program which works in partnership with the National Trust Main Street Center to identify the local programs that meet 10 performance standards. These standards set the benchmarks for measuring an individual Main Street program's application of the Main Street Four-Point Approach to commercial district revitalization.

Evaluation criteria determines the communities that are building comprehensive and sustainable revitalization efforts and include standards such as developing a mission, tracking economic progress, and preserving historic buildings. For more information on the national accreditation program, visit www.preservationnation.org/mainstreet/about-main-street/the-programs/national-programs.html.

In addition to the national accreditation, the Lyons Main Street Program will be a featured program in an upcoming national magazine article reflecting the partnerships that have been formed to celebrate fall harvest each year with the LMSP's "PumpkinPalooza!". Author Carola L. Hartley, Executive Director for the Bridgeton (New Jersey) Main Street Program, penned an article on building partnerships that features the partnerships the LMSP has groomed to bring all of Lyons' businesses and organizations together for a day of Lyons-only fundraising.

The story will be the lead article in the August/September issue of Main Street Now! and will bring national attention the efforts of the LMSP to demonstrate that community revitalization requires on-going partnerships and the volunteer efforts of many. Over 1,400 volunteer hours were logged by LMSP volunteers during the last calendar year completing projects that encompassed everything from community cleanups and weeding/planting to small business assistance, consultations and low-interest loan programs. 2010 estimates of the value of volunteer hours reflects amounts ranging from $21.36 per hour by independentsector.org to $28.04 by philanthropy.com or a value of $30-$39,000.00 in community investment last year alone.

Things Are Looking GREAT for Peppermint Days!

Submitted by:  Jerry Ashley, LMSP Manager

Volunteers are completing community enhancement projects all around Lyons in preparation for the upcoming Peppermint Days. The gateway sign at 14/Phelps Street and Water Street received a landscape freshening up and the public notice board at the Village Square Park received a fresh coat of paint and peppermint striped petunias. Our thanks to each volunteer that has come out to spruce up the flower beds at various parks, intersections, and along the canal waterfront!

You know who you are - YOU ARE APPRECIATED!
