Story by: STEPHANIE KNARR
This past weekend was full of entertaining festivities celebrating the onset of Autumn. On Main Street in Sodus, vendors lined the walkways with craft and jewelry booths and festival foods.
The intersection became filled with instructors and their students for a Zumba® demonstration. Zumba®, the Latin inspired dance-fitness program, was led by area instructors from many dance studios across the county. Onlookers were welcomed to join in the fun and learn these easy dance moves such as salsa and other Latin rhythms.

WOW to Paddle the Erie to Peppermint Festival
Story & Photo By: ROBERT STOPPER, LYONS
Women on the Water (Wow) to join Peppermint Days Festival
On July 13, 2013, Women on the
Water (WOW) will paddle the Erie Canal from Newark to Lyons. Launch time is 9:00 AM.
The 8.5 mile paddle will begin at Wide Waters County Park off Route 31 West, stop
and visit the Newark Port and Welcoming Center, pass through Lock E 28B, visit
Historical Lock E56, pass through Locks E 28A and E 27, and end at the Lyons
Dock where WOW participants will become part of the Lyons Peppermint Days
Festival.
WOW is a group of female friends,
mostly from upstate New York, who enjoy the outdoors, especially paddling the
Adirondacks and Central New York. The organization numbers over 70 participants.
Most members “are of an age,” and one member, a septuagenarian, also just became
a member of the Adirondack 46ers, having climbed all 46 high peaks!
In an effort to share their
enthusiasm for kayaking and the great outdoors, WOW, through North Country
Books of Utica, NY, has published a part-guidebook, part-memoir titled, WOW- Women on the Water- Paddling the Adirondacks and Central New York.
The book, WOW, has received the
Adirondack Center for Writing’s Literary Award as the Best Non-Fiction Book of
2012! A portion of the net royalties
from the book will be donated to the Women’s Fund of
Oneida and Herkimer County.
The book is co- authored by Ruth
Dandrea, Kathy DeLong, Carol Moseman, and Bonnie Sanderson. Photos for the
publication were provided by Audrey Mihalko. The women will participate in the
Newark to Lyons paddle.
WOW members will discuss their
interests in kayaking and autograph books at the Lyons dock.
WOW encourages and invites anyone, female
or male, having an interest in the outdoors and kayaking to join them on this
historical paddle. There are no entry or participation fees; however,
participants are encouraged to “sign up” before the launch. For more information, contact rastopper@yahoo.com.

Impressive Numbers & Awesome Guests Visit Lyons on the Erie Canal
Story & Photos by: ROBERT STOPPER, LYONS
During the 2012 boating season, 272 boats, 20 from
Canada, officially “signed in” and docked at least one evening in Lyons on the
Erie Canal. Passengers on the watercraft represented 30 states and 206
communities from various parts of the world. The 272 boats represented an
increase of 64 boats from the 2011 boating season.
Boaters are friendly people and love to tell their
story. For example: International videographers Ian and Nagaire Caroline from
New Zealand aboard the NAN. The Nan was used by
Paul Newman and Sally Fields in the movie, “The Absence of Malice”; Bucktail
Wayne, the famous Mississippi angler and jig maker aboard Unchained; Ken
Gould from Queensland, Australia, attempting his first Great Loop experience aboard
Aweigh Too Far ; Captain Tom and
his wife Arlene aboard the Hemlock,
a Mid-Lakes Navigation hire boat. Tom is President of the Cape Cod and Island
Tourist Association; Benno and Marlene Klopfer, originally from Germany,
navigating the Erie Canal utilizing only solar power aboard Diesel Duck 41,
a 41 foot aluminum power assisted Trawler Yacht.
Several boating guests were returning from long days
at sea: Captain Dale Broom and family, aboard the sailboat Dilly Dally
was returning home to Duluth, MN from an extensive trip in the Caribbean. This
was his second stop in Lyons. He docked
next to Silvia and Dirk Lison who had arrived aboard s/v Lison Life.
Silvia and Dirk proudly shared a world globe and traced their voyage …. They
were returning to Sarnia, ON…. They were
completing a 24 month sail around the world!
s/v Lison Life docked on Erie Canal bank
Other guests
included: Captain Ben, on R & R from Afghanistan, accompanied by his dog
Blue. Captain Ben was literally rowing his sailboat Junkyard Dog down
the Erie Canal! Another interesting guest was Alaskan adventurer Peter MacKay
from Juno, Alaska. Peter had kayaked the entire length of the Erie Canal in
2010. During that trip, he had spent an evening on the canal bank in Lyons. Now
Peter was biking the Northern Tier Bike Route from Anacortes, Washington to Bar
Harbor, Maine. Peter had arrived in Lyons on his bike by following the NYS Erie
Canal Bike Trail.
Then there was world famous bike, hike, kayak, and
canoe adventurer Bill Nedderman from Lovila, Iowa. Bill was attempting to canoe
the 6000 mile Great Loop in his 20 year old home- made bark strip canoe, the “Helen
Lucille” (named after me Mum!). Bill’s adventure credentials are simply
amazing: 63,000 miles by bike, 34,000 miles hiking, and 32,000 miles by canoe
and kayak. Like several kayakers and bikers during the 2012 season, Bill spent
the evening on the canal bank under the stars in front of the Peppermint
Garden!
Boaters arrive for Lyons Peppermint Days
The greatest number of overnight dockings on the
Erie Canal in Lyons occurred during the annual Peppermint Days Festival in
July. Fourteen (14) boats lined the north side or terminal wall. Passengers on
those boats will always have a “thundering and loud story” to tell about their
stay in Lyons…. Along with other boats anchored in the canal waters, they were
just a few feet away from the famous Lyons Peppermint Days Festival Fireworks known as Thunder on the Eriel!
On behalf of Lyons, NY and all the towns and
villages along the Erie Canal: “Thank you boaters for visiting us during the
2012 boating season. Welcome to the 2013 season! It begins May 1…. Hope to see you soon!”

Lyons Lights It Up!
It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas as the Lyons Main Street Program firms up plans for Peppermint Winter Wonderland. This year, the Lyons Main Street Program has partnered with Lyons National Bank (LNB), Dobbins Drugs, the Ohmann Theatre and the Lyons Chamber of Commerce in celebration of the national Small Business Saturday promotion on Saturday, November 24th to brighten up downtown Lyons for the holidays.
Downtown businesses will be open late for shopping, offer light snacks to their shoppers and Lyons will once again trip the lights fantastic when the fourth edition of Peppermint Winter Wonderland’s “Light Up Lyons Holiday Lights Parade” makes its way through downtown. The parade began four years ago as a LMSP holiday promotion to draw visitors and shoppers to downtown businesses and last year it joined forces with the “Light Up the Park” volunteers to grow both events.
To help set the stage for festive holiday activities, the Lyons Main Street Program and Lyons Chamber of Commerce are urging downtown businesses and residents along the parade route to deck the halls with lots of lights and decorations.
The Holiday Lights Parade, which steps-off at 6 pm, will line up at the Town of Lyons office parking lot at Jackson and Phelps/14 beginning at 5: 30 pm. There are no registrations and entrants need only to arrive at 5:30 pm to be placed in the line-up. Entrants are encouraged to cover anything that moves with lights (which makes the possibilities unlimited!) and join the fun.
Dashboard converters are available for less than $25 and will power portable sound systems or multiple strings of LED lights while increased power converters will power LED lights and inflatable holiday decorations.
The parade route will be south on William Street from Broad Street to Pearl Street; West on Pearl Street to Broad Street; north on Broad Street to Church Street to disperse. While the crowd awaits Santa’s arrival, background holiday music will set the tone and there will be a vendor on hand selling treats and warm beverages.
After Santa’s arrival at the Wayne County Courthouse, Santa will lead the audience in the countdown to the lighting of the park, including lighted decorations on the newly restored bandstand. The Lyons High School Jazz Ensemble and the Lyons Varsity Cheerleaders will perform before Santa leads the crowds to Fox’s at the Ohmann Theatre where he will sit for photographs (bring your own camera!).
Other Ohmann Theatre events for the month of December include a celebration of the theatre’s 98th birthday with a digitally remastered presentation of Gone With the Wind at 7:30 pm on Dec. 6 and 7, and at 3 pm and 7:30 pm on Dec. 8 and 9. On Friday, December 21st, LNB will partner with the theatre again and present free showings of Arthur Christmas at 1 pm and a very special presentation of White Christmas at 7:30.

Made in 1954, White Christmas, starring Bing Crosby, Danny Kaye, Rosemary Clooney and Vera Ellen, is second only to A Christmas Story as a favorite holiday classic and was filmed for the big screen in VistaVision and Technicolor. Only the big screen can provide the venue in which the movie was meant to be shown with all of the big song and dance numbers, colorful costuming, not to mention the big payoff at the end of the movie when the barn doors open to reveal a scene direct from a Currier and Ives print while the cast sings the title song. The free showings on December 21st are presented in conjunction with the Lyons Main Street Program’s “Festive Friday – A Last Minute Shopping Blast” a promotion aimed at last minute shoppers seeking something other than a “big box store” gift. Downtown retail businesses will be open late and offer samples and light snacks to keep shoppers spirits up.

Bikers Along Erie Canal Find Pumpkins in Lyons
Story by: Robert Stopper, Lyons
Bikers, Jeremiah, Chris & Curtis find PumpkinPalooza!
Jeremiah, Chris, and Curtis had been on the trail for 53
days when they arrived in the Lyons Village Park on Saturday morning, October
20, 2012. Their 3500 mile cross country bike trip began in Anacortes,
Washington. They are headed to Boston!
According to Jeremiah, “This is something we all have talked
about for many years so we just decided that now is the time and we
are doing it in simple fashion.” The
bikers have no solar panels mounted on their handlebars and no generators
mounted on the wheel axles. They are towing no BOBs. They
sleep at night in a tent set up “wherever.” They usually travel between 80 to 100 or more miles a day.
According to the bikers, “We entered the Erie Canal trail in
the Buffalo area. The terrain along the canal is beautiful. There really is a
ton of history along the way. Then there are surprises like arriving here at
the beginning of your PumpkinPalooza Festival…. but now we are at the end of the trail!”
Like so many bikers who have stopped in Lyons this past
year, Jeremiah, Chris, and Curtis are following a basic trail from the Adventure Cycling Organization and then
adding “our own” trails of interest.
After a “quasi”
second breakfast of fried dough, apple cider, pumpkin custard, pumpkin bread, and
apple yummy, the bikers continued eastward along Route 31. They plan to be in
Boston in “just a few” days!

Paint The Village Peppermint
Submitted by: Jerry Ashley, Lyons Main Street Program
The summer festival season is upon us and in Lyons, that means Peppermint Days! To get the village looking its minty best, the Lyons Main Street Program is once again sponsoring the "Paint the Village Peppermint!" contest.
Beginning June 15th, the residents of Lyons are encouraged to get into the festival spirit by decorating their homes and businesses in red and white. Yes, it may be warm outside but it's time to rummage through holiday decorations to pull out red and white lights, ribbons, and bunting and locate those candy canes and peppermint disks.
In years past folks have lit up and festooned their porches, built peppermint "may poles", crafted peppermint canes and disks as well as candy land themed windows. Use your imagination and creativity to reflect your peppermint pride! Cash awards will be bestowed upon the best residence and business entries and participants are asked to keep their decorations up until July 15th.
To be sure that your entry is judged by the judging committee, please let the LMSP know your entry address no later than Tuesday, July 3rd by contacting the LMSP at (315) 871-4220 or via email at lyonsmainstreetprogram@gmail. com.
This years' Peppermint Days festival runs from July 12th through the 15th with the Kiddy Parade on the 13th at 6 pm, the Grand Parade on the 14th at 6 pm, the "Thunder Over the Erie" fireworks display on the 14th at 10 pm and the Car Show on the 15th. For more information on Peppermint Days, please contact Dorothy Barnes, chair of Peppermint Days Committee, at (315) 946-4623.

Calling all racers for Palmyra Pirate Weekend 2011 events!
SUBMITTED by Pyrate MacDeath aka William Unterborn (29-Jun-2011)
Requiring All Racing Rapscallions!
The Pirates of the Erie Canal require rascally racers for three thrilling events during Palmyra Pirate Weekend, on Saturday, August 6, 2011 in Palmyra, NY.
First, run, jog or walk the inaugural Jolly Roger 5K, winding through the Town and Village of Palmyra. Your participation will help raise vital funds for the award-winning and globe-trotting Palmyra-Macedon High School Select Choir.
Next, the fourth running of the Pillage ‘N the Village streaks straight through the heart of historic Palmyra’s 19th century Main Street business district, with five-person crews competing head-to-head against other running raiders and scurrying scallywags for a cash prize and other awards.
Pirates of all rank--the ranker the better--are welcome to enlist, with local and regional service and community organizations, and businesses expected to round out the racing field.
The Ontario Fire Department has absconded with top honors for each of the race’s first three years. Can you and your bawdy band of buccaneers knock them out of their comfortable crow’s nest?
Last, book your berth for the Inkredible Kanal Korsair Kayak Kontest, hosted by Fuzzy Guppies, providing human powered watercraft, including the Aqua Ball (think human hamster ball!) all day at the Port of Palmyra Marina.
