The Peppermint Days Committee has announced this year’s 20th Anniversary schedule including first-time events along with returning favorites such as music in the park, “Thunder over the Erie” fireworks display and the 20th Anniversary Grand Parade. New to the annual festival this year are “Junk in Your Trunk” (a flea-market style sale where anything that you can cram into the trunk of your car may be sold in a paid parking space adjacent to the festival site), tractor square dance, a rubber duck race, pontoon boat rides on the Erie Canal and an R&B concert by Pop Jones at the Ohmann Theatre. The H. G. Hotchkiss Peppermint Oil building will be open for tours with a special exhibit featuring memorabilia from the past 20 years of Peppermint Days. Additional items are popping up on this year’s schedule almost daily and some of the newest are a 50’s Costume Contest for adults and kids and a hula hoop contest that will coincide with the car show and the Ohmann Theatre showing of “American Graffiti”. Here is a list of scheduled events for Peppermint Days (July 7th – 11th, downtown Lyons):

Wednesday night, July 7th at 7pm, The Ohmann Theatre will open its doors for the Interchurch Council Ecumenical Service that has become the traditional start to Peppermint Days. This year, the service will include a tribute to Miss Anne Hotchkiss, great granddaughter of H.G. Hotchkiss, founder of Hotchkiss Essential Oils, who passed away several months ago. Thursday, July 8th in the Village Square Park, there will be registration for the Kiddy Parade (6-8 pm, this year’s theme is “Peppermint” and the categories are “Peppermint Pride”, “Eco-Friendly – Lyons Goes Green”, “Heroes and Villains”, “Disney Fairytales” and “One-of-a-kind”. Bikes, mini-floats and strollers are welcomed!). Baking contest entries may be dropped off at 5:30 pm (judging at 6 pm) and Nick Gillette will be playing at 7 pm. Friday, July 9th, the Hotchkiss Building will be open from 1 pm – 4 pm and starting at 5 pm, there will be food and craft vendors. Line-up for the Kiddy Parade is at 6 pm (in front of the Elementary School, judging at 6:15 and parade steps off for its trip through downtown at 6:30) and from 6 pm – 10 pm, Midnight Blind will entertain.

Saturday morning, July 10th, the days’ activities will kick off with the Lyons Farmer’s Market (downtown, 7:30 am – 11am) and the Rotary Breakfast as well as the food and craft vendors will open at 8 am. The Lyons Community Center’s 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament starts at 8 am on William Street. A chainsaw sculptor, rock climbing wall, Magician show and “Junk in Your Trunk” sale (on Broad Street) start at 9 am as does the Peppermint Days Tractor Show. Tractor events that will be featured are Tractor Barrel Racing (11am), a “Slow” Tractor Race (1 pm) and the Tractor Square Dance (3 pm). The Hotchkiss Building will be open from 10 am – 4 pm and the Peppermint Days Silent Auction runs 10 am – 6 pm. Pontoon Boat rides by Stivers Marina along the Erie Canal will begin at 11 am with runs every two hours (the last one at 9 will take folks out for a canal view of the “Thunder over the Erie” fireworks display). The 20th Anniversary Peppermint Days Grand Parade steps off at 7 pm and runs the length of William Street – watch as we debut our first music competition with a $1,750.00 first prize! Rhythm and Blues sensation, Pop Jones will be live onstage at the Ohmann Theatre at 8 pm. “Thunder over the Erie” fireworks display begins at 10 pm.
